Water/Wastewater Construction Worker I-II
Location:
City of Clarksville – Water & Wastewater Construction Division of the Gas & Water Department.
First level of the Water/Wastewater Construction series. Incumbents perform general repair and installation of water distribution and wastewater collection systems under training and direction. Responsibilities include operating power and hand tools to excavate lines, installing water and wastewater systems, inspecting and repairing existing infrastructure, recording activities, and filing paperwork.
Job Summary (Wastewater Construction Worker II)Second level of the series. Incumbents perform semi‑skilled and skilled construction and maintenance of water distribution and wastewater collection systems. Responsibilities include locating, inspecting, and maintaining manholes, valves, and hydrants; plumbing and pipe‑fitting water and wastewater lines; ordering supplies; cleaning and exercising valves; recording utility locations in a GIS system; maintaining records; and performing duties of lower levels.
Essential Functions (Wastewater Construction Worker I)- Maintain, operate, and check operation of collection systems and facilities, including locating, inspecting, maintaining, and repairing manholes, valves, and hydrants; plumbing and pipe‑fitting water and wastewater lines; cleaning and exercising valves.
- Inspect equipment and remote facilities, report failures or operating difficulties, perform necessary repairs, cleaning, lubrication, and routine maintenance.
- Ensure state and EPA regulations are strictly followed.
- Ensure proper disinfection procedures are met when working on water lines to protect city drinking water.
- Maintain records and logs of systems operation and maintenance activities.
- Provide coverage without other personnel, working after hours and on‑call as assigned.
- Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as required.

- High school graduate or equivalent; and
- Equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the job’s essential duties.

- Valid driver’s license issued by the State of Tennessee.
- Must obtain a Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License within the first 6 months of employment.
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
- Position typically requires one of the following certifications:
- TN Grade 2 Water Distribution Systems Operator Certification
- TN Grade 2 Wastewater Collection Systems Operator Certification
- Knowledge of operation and maintenance of applicable power and hand tools, equipment, and machinery; basic inspection principles; safe work methods; record‑keeping principles.
