About the Job

The Electrical Journeyman will interact professionally with both internal and external customers. They will be trained and knowledgeable to perform any and all electrical assignments. Additionally, the Journeyman will lead and instruct Apprentices through all job assignments and tasks to ensure they are completed.

What You’ll Do
  • Complete all assigned jobs safely and in the most efficient manner available. Use experience and training to make recommendations that will reduce cost to the assignment.
  • Seek out additional training in any identified developmental areas.
  • Direct supervision of assigned apprentice(s) to assure that the apprentice is following all VMC policies and safety procedures.
  • Assist the Electrical foreman with department cost control.
  • Utilize electrical experience to organize and assign tasks to eliminate idle time whenever possible.
  • Keep the Electrical Foreman informed on the progress of all assignments, and of any variables that may change the scope of the assigned task.
  • Assist the Electrical Foreman in identifying skills that apprentices may be lacking and assist in creating training that will raise the skill level of the other journeymen and Apprentices.
  • Ensure electrical work and equipment complies with the NEC, MSHA and OSHA requirements.
  • Work with department leadership to implement changes necessary to make any changes manageable and sustainable.
  • This job description shall be considered the minimum requirements of the Journeyman position. The Journeyman shall not be limited to this job description but shall be able to adjust to any and all situations that may arise while performing assigned tasks.
Other Requirements
  • Must have the ability to lift 40 pounds and occasionally heavier items; able to stand, sit and walk for long periods of time.
  • Must have the ability to drive a repair truck, pick up or forklift truck on a daily basis.
  • Knowledge in use of phone systems, cell phones and other electronic devices is essential.
  • Must have the ability to use computerized equipment and technology.
  • Local travel as well as a periodic need to travel by airline.
  • Ability to work in a very stressful, deadline-oriented environment that requires complex, technical information and decision making.
  • Must be able to present complex information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to test electrical equipment, Electrical PPE, Electrician’s hand tools and motorized vehicles.
  • Equipment operation – proficiency in operating large equipment, understanding controls, gauges, indicators, handling attachments, and applications.
  • Safety awareness – recognize, understand and adhere to safety protocols and procedures, proactive in identifying potential hazards.
  • Technical expertise – solid mechanical understanding of mobile equipment, basic maintenance checks, troubleshooting minor issues.
  • Material handling – load materials onto trucks, conveyors, maintain load stability and distribution.
  • Problem solving – identify, analyze, and resolve work-related issues efficiently and effectively.
  • Teamwork and collaboration – work effectively with others, sharing knowledge, being open to feedback.
  • Adaptability – adapt to new conditions, remain flexible and open-minded during change.
Skills You’ll Need Education

High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience

Completion of an Apprenticeship Program or 5+ years of training in the electrical field.

Minimum of 10 years of experience in the electrical trade, laying out work and organizing jobs.
