The Correctional Officer Trainee is an entry‑level, full‑time position with the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC). Employees perform correctional work in state prisons, overseeing the custody, rehabilitation, and reentry of inmates. Correctional officers participate in custody, transport, detention, treatment, and rehabilitation of adult inmates in accordance with ADOC administrative regulations and job‑specific training. Officers must be alert, decisive, demonstrate good judgment, and serve the citizens of the State of Alabama with honor and integrity.
Responsibilities- Stand watch in halls or wall towers to control movement of inmates.
- Supervise groups of inmates on work details in kitchens, shops, laundries, recreation areas; instruct inmates performing semi‑skilled and unskilled manual assignments; check inmates in and out of the institution.
- Inspect quarters for safety and sanitary conditions and for presence of contraband; search inmates and visitors for contraband.
- Maintain constant alertness and report unusual conditions and disturbances; inspect doors, fences, and other security equipment.
- Make regular and unscheduled inmate counts and constant checks on those supervised.
- Complete reports and keep records of work progress, inmate behavior, infractions of rules of conduct, and unusual occurrences.
- Drive transfer vehicle, inspect and maintain screens and other safety equipment in perfect condition.
- Explain to inmates rules, procedures, and services available at correctional institutions; assist inmates with personal problems, educational and vocational opportunities, and work assignments through day‑to‑day contacts.
- Observe inmate behavior and adjustment to a correctional environment; submit evaluation reports.
- Instruct inmates in personal hygiene, discipline, and proper etiquette.
- High school diploma or GED certificate (copy will be required during hiring process).
- 19 years of age or older.
- Must provide one of the following during the hiring process:
- Valid certification of having passed the Basic Ability Test (BAT) for Law Enforcement Officers (ACT Work Keys).
- Proof of possession of an Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university (copy of diploma or transcript will be required).
- Applicants previously certified by APOSTC are not required to take the BAT, provided they have been active within the last ten (10) years.
- U.S. Citizen at the time of appointment.
- Valid driver’s license from State of residency.
- Meet APOSTC requirements, designated agency training, and other specialized training during probationary period, including successful completion of a 10‑week training program at the ADOC Training Center in Selma.
- Participate in a pre‑employment physical assessment.
- Successfully complete background investigation, including fingerprint‑based criminal history background check and drug screening; applicants with felony and/or domestic violence conviction are not eligible for employment.
- If applicant is a veteran of the U.S. armed forces, discharge must be under honorable conditions.
- Applicants are subject to assignment anywhere within the State.
- Subsistence Pay: $12/day physically worked (estimated $2,500–$3,000 annual benefit).
