Overview
St. Louis County Government Department of Transportation and Public Works is currently seeking qualified individuals to join their team as Signal Technician Assistants or Signal Technicians. The position involves installation and repair of electronic traffic signals and controllers. The qualifications of the selected individuals determine whether they are hired as Assistants (starting salary $21.49–$25.79) or Technicians ($25.07–$30.08).
Progression from Assistant to Technician occurs once minimum qualifications are met.
Shift ScheduleRegular shift – 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM (M‑F)
Early shift – 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM (M‑F), on‑call from 3:00 AM – 6:00 AM (rotational, 4 straight weeks, at least twice a year)
Night shift – 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM (M‑F), on‑call from 11:30 PM – 3:00 AM (rotational, 4 straight weeks, at least twice a year)
Both Early and Night rotational shifts are on‑call during holidays. Holiday on‑call:
Early 3:00 AM – 3:00 PM, Night 3:00 PM – 3:00 AM.
Weekend on‑call:
Saturday 3:00 AM – Monday 3:00 AM (one technician on call each weekend).

- Assist Signal Technicians with maintenance tasks associated with installation, repair, and upkeep of electronic traffic signals and controllers.
- Assist Signal Technicians in responding to emergency situations, including replacement of signal knockdowns and correction of malfunctions.
- Maintain parts inventory and supplies for field operations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Graduation from a Technical School electronics program.
- Associate’s Degree in electronics.
- Two years of experience repairing or maintaining electronic devices and control systems.
- Equivalent amount of training and experience.
- One year of experience repairing or maintaining electronic devices and control systems.
- Associate’s Degree in electronics.
- Graduation from a Technical School electronics program.
Both positions require possession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six months of employment.
Selection and AppointmentA selection committee evaluates qualifications, including education, experience, supplemental questions, references, and other information. The committee may establish criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above.
Interview questions comprise 100% of the applicant’s earned grade; a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview is required for appointment.
Top ranking candidates will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority for final decision.
All applicants conditionally offered a merit position must complete a urinalysis screening prior to appointment. Screening performed by a reputable clinical laboratory; cost covered by the County.
