Join to apply for the Backhoe Operator role s position is a key role in our heavy civil construction team, responsible for digging trenches and holes, operating the backhoe and excavator, and ensuring safe, efficient work on a variety of sites.

Responsible for digging trenches and holes, opening and closing the bucket, raising and lowering the boom, driving the backhoe forward and backward, and using stabilizers to prevent machine movement while digging. Must understand and comply with OSHA trenching requirements, clear zone regulations, and site safety protocols.

• Able to operate the excavator and backhoe on road building and heavy construction projects.
• Able to perform operations for road bed preparation, utilities trenching, excavations, pipelines, land clearing and demolition.
• Able to operate a backhoe with a variety of attachments.
• Capable of performing earthmoving duties.
• Able to lift in close proximity to other people, equipment and utilities.
• Able to work on sites and on all types of terrain.
• Implementation of production goals.
• Safe operation of equipment.
• OSHA trenching requirements compliance.
• Knowledge of the clear zone.
• Grade and survey layout.
• Working and installing trench boxes and steel plates.
• Proper pre‑start, shutdown and daily maintenance including cleaning the machine.
• Loading trucks.
• Load and unloading of small equipment.
• Read grade stakes.
• Cut grade.
• Excavation for structures and footings.
• Fine grade slopes and contours suitable for sod.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Requires demonstrable previous experience as a Backhoe Operator.
• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Must be able to understand work directions and communicate effectively with job site supervisors and fellow employees.
• Three to five years or more of industry‑related experience, with emphasis on roads, highways, and bridges.

• Constant effort, standing and sitting during an 8‑hour shift, ability to stoop, bend, and crouch as required.
• Frequently walk and climb on uneven surfaces of heavy equipment.
• Ability to lift at least 50 pounds frequently and carry 30 pounds personally, up to 150 pounds with assistance.
• Manual dexterity to operate hand tools.
• Maintain constant alertness to concurrent activities on the construction site.
• Must be able to climb on and off heavy mobile equipment safely.

• Outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Exposure to high levels of noise, grease, and dust typical of road construction.
• Regular work near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
• Possible exposure to substances such as form oil, grease, gasoline, diesel fuel, and asphalt concentrate at high temperatures.
