Overview

The purpose of the Medical Biller is to help our clients correctly bill their insurance companies for the services they receive at Bayside Urgent Care Center. This role helps patients understand their insurance coverage and billings, and it helps the urgent care by ensuring we are paid for our services. It is an essential urgent care job.

Responsibilities
  • Create accurate, formally correct insurance claims and send these claims to insurance companies for reimbursement.
  • Be familiar with and able to perform duties with electronic billing software and practice management systems, including electronic and paper claim processing and clearinghouses.
  • Have familiarity with and be able to perform duties with all claim formats for major payers (e.g., BCBS and other private payers, Medicare, Medicaid, TRICARE, workers’ compensation, and disability organizations); adjust claims as required.
  • Obtain referrals and pre-authorizations as required for procedures.
  • Verify that procedural codes and diagnostic codes support one another.
  • Monitor daily claims, work with aging patients and insurance companies.
  • Use workbaskets and ensure relevant information from patients is correct to proceed with a claim.
  • bill patient portions after insurance pays and interpret Explanation of Benefits (EOB) and transaction reports.
  • Be familiar with co-pays, coinsurance, and deductibles to bill patients correctly.
  • Determine why a claim was denied or rejected, correct errors if possible, resubmit rejected claims, and prepare and submit appeals.
  • Ensure charges and reimbursements align with the Provider’s agreement with the payer and contact insurers regarding any payment discrepancies.
  • Answer all patient or insurance company inquiries and work within a team atmosphere.
Qualifications
  • Be highly organized and attentive to detail.
  • Have familiarity with medical terminology.
  • Have thorough knowledge of ICD-10 codes for diagnostics and CPT/HCPCS codes for procedures and their modifiers.
  • Keep operations within 2–5 lag days.
  • Be familiar with and able to perform duties with electronic billing software and practice management systems, including electronic and paper claim processing and clearinghouses.
  • Have familiarity with all claim formats for major payers (BCBS, Medicare, Medicaid, TRICARE, workers’ compensation, etc.) and adjust claims as needed.
  • Create bills for patient payments and billing patients for their responsibility after insurance pays.
  • Be able to interpret EOBs and explain the billing process to patients.
  • Be able to determine why a claim was denied or rejected and correct errors if possible.
  • Resubmit denied claims; prepare and submit appeals.
  • Be able to work within a team atmosphere.
