Position: Skilled Trades worker I

ENTRY SALARY: $ 44,148.12

POSITION OPEN UNTIL FILLED

Under general supervision, the Skilled Trades worker I assists in repairs, maintenance, inspections, and care of City buildings, apparatus, and facilities. Work involves specialized knowledge and skills in performing tradeswork at a semi-skilled level. Internal candidates have the opportunity to participate in a job proficiency guide. Upon successful completion of JPG program, candidate will be eligible to promote to next level for Skilled Trades worker.

Current recruitment is for our General Support Services Department.

Essential Functions

Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assists in projects in accordance with general instructions.
  • Lays, finishes, and repairs concrete sidewalks, floors, walls, and steps.
  • Performs rough and finish carpentry work; builds, repairs, and refinishes furniture; builds and installs partitions, platforms, stagings, counter-dividers, and other similar work.
  • Performs locksmith work, plumbing, and a variety of other trades tasks including roofing, glazing, painting, plastering, sanding & refinishing floors, and demolition & salvage work on City buildings, facilities, and recreation areas; remains on call 24/7 in the event of emergencies or problems.
  • Assists in identifying maintenance and repair needs, addresses emergent issues, and provides skilled solutions.
  • Responds, engages, and interacts with the public on a daily basis.
  • Work is subject to review by a Building & Maintenance management or Skilled Trades worker II or III.
  • Executes daily workload through an electronic work order system by receiving and tracking work orders to completion.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment

A valid State driver’s license is required.

Must obtain and maintain Forklift and Tow Equipment Certification within one (1) year of hire.

Education and Experience

High School Diploma, High School Equivalency Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate AND two (2) years of maintenance, tradeswork, or other skilled experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

NOTE:

  • Cleaning techniques and protocols
  • Methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment of building maintenance and repair work
  • Construction sites and related safety protocols
  • Various trades and industries; welding and fabricating
  • Safety and hazard precautions
  • Power tools and heavy equipment
  • Department policies and protocols
  • Equipment maintenance practices and methods
Skill in
  • Inspecting, repairing, installing, and suggesting layouts for public equipment and facilities
  • Providing maintenance and repair for miscellaneous equipment used in facilities, on beaches, and in the marina
  • Successfully perform duties in a typical construction environment
  • Reading blueprints and interpreting manuals
  • Visual acuity to make construction measurements
  • Manual dexterity to work with various hand and/or power tools
  • Operating vessels, heavy equipment, and other tools
  • Engaging and responding to customers and the public
  • Understanding and complying with oral and written instructions
  • Using tact and independent judgment within established guidelines
