Description
We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated postdoc to join a dynamic and multi-disciplinary team at Clemson University with expertise across the fields of forestry, wildlife, fisheries, and fire ecology. The individual will be primarily supervised by Dr. Cathy Jachowski but will work with a large team of PI’s, project specialists, and graduate students in the College of Agriculture Forestry and Life Sciences at Clemson University along with federal, state, and non-governmental organizations on a large project aimed at assessing impacts of Hurricane Helene on fish and wildlife populations and their habitats in National Forests of North Carolina.
Hurricane Helene caused widespread flooding, landslides, and destruction across the southern Appalachian region in September 2024. These impacts caused long‑term and potentially permanent changes to terrestrial and aquatic habitat distribution, ecosystem structure, and function.
Primary responsibilities will include accumulation, analysis and interpretation of pre-existing data to develop species distribution models intended to guide on‑going assessment, monitoring, and restoration activities, and leveraging pre-existing datasets to quantify impacts of flooding, landslides, and blowdowns on amphibians, reptiles, molluscs, arthropods, birds, and mammals. The individual will assist in design and implementation of surveys to fill in critical knowledge gaps required to guide recovery of focal species, resources, and ecosystems and is expected to prepare and publish manuscripts in peer‑refereed journals.
QualificationsMinimum Requirements:
- A PhD in wildlife and fisheries, ecology, biology, or equivalent
- Proficiency in species distribution modeling
- Lead authorship on at least two peer‑reviewed publications in ecological or natural resource management journals
- Must possess a valid US driver's license
Individuals with the following skills are preferred:
- Communicating and working with state and federal agencies, NGOs, and private landowners
- Experience/willingness to work in remote areas under adverse conditions
- Managing/organizing large databases
- Proficiency in Program R (proficiency in Program MARK desired)
- Population modeling experience (occupancy, abundance, apparent survival)
