Are you a Mechanical Design Engineer looking for an opportunity where you can develop your skills, take ownership of your designs and see your work progress from CAD through to manufacture and installation?
We re working with an established specialist engineering and manufacturing business that designs and produces complex mechanical equipment for customers across a range of international markets.
Due to continued development of the engineering function, they are looking to appoint a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their team and contribute to the design, development and continuous improvement of their products.
This is a great opportunity for a developing engineer who wants more than simply producing drawings. You ll work closely with engineering and manufacturing teams and gain valuable exposure to the complete product lifecycle.
The RoleWorking as part of a small, multidisciplinary Engineering team, you ll be involved in mechanical design activities from initial concepts through to production.
You ll work closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Purchasing, Sales, Service and external suppliers, helping to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable and commercially viable.
The role will involve a mixture of new design, modifications and product improvement, making it well suited to someone who enjoys variety and practical problem-solving.
Key responsibilities- Create and develop 3D CAD models, assemblies and manufacturing drawings.
- Design mechanical components and assemblies for manufacture and assembly.
- Support the development of new product and equipment designs.
- Modify and improve existing designs.
- Produce accurate Bills of Materials and engineering documentation.
- Support design reviews and technical problem-solving.
- Work closely with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are practical and achievable.
- Consider materials, manufacturing processes, tolerances and assembly requirements.
- Apply Design for Manufacture principles.
- Identify opportunities to simplify designs and improve manufacturing efficiency.
- Support the resolution of manufacturing and installation issues.
- Assist with product improvement, cost reduction and component standardisation.
- Liaise with suppliers on components and technical requirements.
- Provide technical support to Production and Service teams where required.
We re looking for a practical and technically minded Mechanical Design Engineer who enjoys solving problems and wants to develop their career within a hands-on engineering environment.
You may already have some commercial experience in mechanical design, or be an early-career engineer looking for an opportunity to broaden your experience and take on more responsibility.
Ideally, you will have:
- Experience of mechanical design within a manufacturing or engineering environment.
- Good experience using 3D CAD.
- Experience producing engineering or manufacturing drawings.
- A good understanding of mechanical engineering principles.
- An understanding of materials, manufacturing processes and tolerances.
- Experience designing components or assemblies.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Good practical problem-solving skills.
- The ability to work effectively with manufacturing and engineering teams.
- Good communication and organisational skills.
- A genuine interest in how products are designed and manufactured.
Experience with any of the following would be advantageous:
- Solid Works or another 3D CAD package.
- Machinery or industrial equipment.
- Special-purpose machinery.
- Capital equipment.
- Sheet metal fabrication.
- Welded or fabricated structures.
- Pneumatics or mechanical systems.
- Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA).
- Product development or R&D.
- Engineering change and revision control.
- Large mechanical assemblies.
- Industrial automation.
An HNC, HND, degree or equivalent engineering qualification would be advantageous, although relevant practical experience will also be considered.
