Position Overview

The agent in this position will develop, market, implement, and evaluate a plan of work in Family & Consumer Sciences that leads to improved quality of life for Cleveland County families and individuals. The plan of work will shape and guide informal educational programs and learning activities that help citizens develop the knowledge and skills needed to make healthy food choices, improve health & wellness through diet & physical activity, prepare nutritious meals at home, use local foods, practice food safety principles, stretch the food dollar, maximize food assistance benefits, and safely preserve food at home.

The agent will also collaborate with community agencies and organizations to address local needs related to kinship care and food insecurity, serve as the agent liaison for the Cleveland County Extension & Community Association, provide leadership, supervision, and assistance to the organization, and create opportunities for members to serve as Extension volunteers.

Job Duties / Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate to stakeholders, colleagues, partners and others that the work is based on local needs and priorities and generates intended outcomes & impacts.
  • Show that the program is aligned with statewide priorities to facilitate the collective impact of Extension across the state.
  • Plan and deliver comprehensive research-based educational programming addressed to identified local issues.
  • Utilize varied educational strategies and teaching methods to help clientele solve complex problems and implement appropriate research-based strategies.
  • Use appropriate evaluation methods and tools to improve the effectiveness and quality of teaching methods, and to evaluate program outcomes and impacts.
  • Employ effective marketing strategies to build awareness of Extension’s educational programs and events, grow Extension’s brand recognition and public image, and communicate the value and impact of Extension programs.

Qualifications
  • Education: One of the following:
    • A Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 overall or 3.0 in family and consumer sciences (or related field).
    • A Bachelor’s degree plus at least half of a Master’s curriculum with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
    • A Master’s degree in family and consumer sciences (or related field).
  • Experience: Minimum work experience in family and consumer sciences, nutrition, or related field, and experience in developing, implementing, or evaluating outreach or educational programs.
  • Skills: Self‑directed with strong work ethic, energetic and innovative, excellent oral & written communication, team player, grant writing/management, time & resource management, comfortable public speaking.
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license within 60 days of hire and continuous maintenance.
Preferred
  • A Master’s degree at the time of hiring, with at least one degree in family and consumer sciences, nutrition, or related science.
  • Experience in community-based initiatives and knowledge of local food systems.
Recruitment and Hiring Details

Anticipated Hiring Range: Minimum Bachelor's $40,000;
Minimum Master's $45,000;
Minimum Doctorate $50,000 (commensurate with experience).
