Brief Description
The Manager of Sub-Contracted Crane Operations oversees all activities related to the selection, coordination, performance, and compliance of third-party crane service providers. This role ensures that all crane operations meet or exceed CMAA, ASME, OSHA, NEC/NFPA 70 design standards, contractual obligations, safety protocols, and organizational financial performance goals. The manager acts as the primary liaison between subcontracted crane vendors, internal operations, project managers, and safety teams.
Responsibilities- Develop and manage the crane operations budget, including subcontractor costs, installation costs, equipment rentals, and other related expenses.
- Monitor financial performance and implement strategies to control costs, reduce inefficiencies, and optimize spending.
- Prepare financial forecasts, variance reports, and cost–benefit analyses to support organizational decision‑making.
- Identify, qualify, and manage subcontracted manufacturing partners for crane components and assemblies.
- Establish clear expectations around scope, deliverables, timelines, and performance metrics aligned with CMAA, ASME, OSHA and applicable ISO Standard crane classifications and requirements.
- Conduct regular site visits and audits to evaluate vendor capacity, capability, and compliance.
- Monitor production schedules to ensure on‑time delivery of crane components in accordance with project timelines.
- Coordinate Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) inspections and documentation review.
- Implement corrective and preventive action plans when non‑conformance issues are identified.
- Support procurement in developing RFQs, evaluating bids, negotiating contracts, and managing budgets.
- Track and control costs associated with subcontracted work.
- Review and validate invoices, change orders, and claims.
- Work closely with design engineering to communicate technical requirements and ensure manufacturability in accordance with CMAA structural, mechanical, and electrical specifications.
- Provide technical guidance to subcontractors regarding crane design, load calculations, structural components, and fabrication requirements.
- Ensure timely and accurate flow of drawings, specifications, and revisions.
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and participating in professional societies.
- Support customers through working directly with Project Management team to maintain customer delivery schedule.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing, Construction Management, or related field (preferred).
- 5–10 years of experience in heavy equipment manufacturing, crane fabrication, structural steel, or a similar industry.
- Experience managing subcontractors or external manufacturing suppliers.
- Prior experience working with or applying CMAA crane standards (e.g., CMAA 70, CMAA 74, CMAA 78) is strongly preferred.
- A Certified PE license is a plus.
- Strong knowledge of crane design, fabrication processes, welding, machining, and structural assembly.
- Excellent project management, organizational, and contract administration skills.
- Strong communication and relationship‑building abilities.
- Ability to read engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
- Problem‑solving mindset with the ability to work cross‑functionally.
- Working knowledge of CMAA, UL, NEC/NFPA, CE and OSHA standards and specifications.
- Knowledgeable of sensory technologies Laser, Radar, LIDAR, Ultrasonic, Scanners, Vision, etc.
- Must successfully complete a criminal background check, drug screen and E‑verify.
- Proficient in MS Office products.
- Communicating with associates, suppliers, and customers.
- Able to troubleshoot and identify problems, root causes, alternative solutions and components.
- Self‑motivated to pursue continuous improvement.
