CTL Engineering is hiring Inspectors | Construction Services for ODOT (transportation) projects.
CTL Engineering is an award‑winning, full‑service consulting engineering firm with 15 locations across OH, IN, WV, KY, NC, SC, and VA, with a rich history of 98 years in business. We provide civil/site design and land surveying, environmental, geotechnical, construction administration & inspection, accident reconstruction, roofing/building envelope, A/V system design, troubleshooting & installation, transportation design (bridge/roadway), and specialized testing services to the construction industry.
We are looking for Inspectors | Construction Services who will play a key role in all aspects of construction administration, inspection and testing services for state (ODOT), county, and local clients. You’ll be involved in the testing and inspection aspects of a wide variety of construction projects including those primarily in the roadway/bridge arena (but may also include water/wastewater, aviation, commercial, and municipal utility/infrastructure sectors).
You’ll leverage your expertise in construction inspection and creative problem‑solving skills while collaborating closely with institutions/municipal agencies.
- This position will primarily involve field work with some office work.
- Opportunity to work independently on broad projects under direction of a Department Manager.
- Projects are typically in the northern Ohio region; frequent travel within this region is expected.
- A stipend for personal vehicle use or a company take‑home vehicle will be provided, based on the assignment.
- ODOT project experience is a strong plus.
- Monitor and enforce quality standards and specifications.
- Read project drawings, specifications, blueprints, and work on a variety of construction projects.
- Perform construction administration and inspection services for state, county and local roadway and bridge projects and municipal utility or infrastructure projects.
- Inspect construction projects to ensure contractor compliance with state specifications, plans and/or proposals on roadway and bridge projects.
- Verify plan quantities and calculations are within bid plans.
- Prepare and maintain project records and reports in a timely manner.
- Notify the Contractor or the Project Engineer with status updates or about non‑conforming work.
- Possibly conduct hazardous material surveys, as well as asbestos abatement monitoring services during abatement projects.
- Conduct quality control testing at project sites, including concrete, soils, masonry, asphalt, aggregate and reinforcing steel.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Project Engineer or Project Manager.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of engineering, construction, testing and inspection principles.
- Experience with materials and laboratory testing.
- Experience with quality control testing and compliance specifications.
- Experience with standard testing and observation methods.
- Understanding of construction or engineering services.
- Experience in performing quality control initiatives and performance testing.
- Skill in lab reporting, writing reports and maintaining records.
- Ability to manage projects with little or no supervision.
- Demonstrated ability of monitoring construction and demolition environments.
- Must be able to interact well with others.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work in external environmental conditions during difficult weather.
- Ability to provide status updates independently.
- Be quality‑minded and client‑focused.
- Strong plus if you have completed the ODOT Certified Technician program… OR…
- Has a Bachelor’s degree in either Civil Engineering or Construction Management.
- Technical school or community college graduate.
- Preferred:
Associate degree with 2+ years of additional related work experience. - 2+ years of related experience.
- Familiarity with highway construction specifications and previous field experience.
