Eaton’s ES AMER ESS division is currently seeking a Utility Protection and Control Technician I. In this role, our technicians work remotely, travel up to 3 consecutive weeks at a time, and will work additional hours and occasional weekends when supporting client commissioning activities. Travel is primarily in the Northeast and northern Mid‑West based on customer requirements. A company vehicle is provided for both business and personal use.

The expected annual salary range for this role is $83,250.00 ($40.02/hr) – $ ($62.50/hr) a year. In addition to base salary, you are eligible for premium pay overtime, and may be eligible for a per diem based on client assignment. You’ll Do

As a Utility Protection & Control (P&C) Technician I, you’ll assist the Lead Technician in overseeing technical operations and documentation, including work plans, isolation plans and functional test plans. This hands‑on role involves comprehensive testing and final checkout ensuring the highest standards of safety and reliability. As a P&C Technician I, you’ll collaborate closely with the Lead Technician, acting as a crucial safeguard to identify and correct any errors from design or installation, protecting employees, equipment and the integrity of transmission and distribution systems.

This Position You Will
  • Work around energized “In‑Service” electrical equipment to perform testing and commissioning activities on reliability upgrades in energized “brownfield” transmission stations.
  • Assist in the development of isolation plans & procedures for the removal of existing equipment such as protective relays, relay panels, AC/DC panels, battery systems, breakers, transformers, SSVTs, CCVTs, PTs, CTs, and linear couplers.
  • Communicate technical information to non‑technical personnel, educate customers, and present information to internal and external customers.
  • Assist with all aspects of testing of substation devices and equipment.
  • Identify and resolve design errors.
  • Directly witness or perform critical tests such as DC functional trip testing prior to energization and in‑service.
Position Success Criteria
  • Successfully complete and maintain compliance with Eaton’s safety qualification program and policy. This includes role‑applicable portions of the EESS Qualified Electrical Worker (QEW) program and any required annual re‑certifications thereafter.
  • Submit to periodic customer‑required background and drug screenings.
Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of utility substation relay testing experience or currently enrolled in a 2‑year relay testing technical program (community college or trade school accredited program), or a bachelor’s program in a related technical field with completion by June 2026.

  • Must reside within the contiguous United States to be considered.
  • Possess and maintain a valid and unrestricted driver’s license.
  • Submit to initial and periodic customer‑required background and drug screenings.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate or Bachelor degree in electrical engineering from an accredited institution and/or applicable military experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in utility substation electrical testing experience.
  • Transmission substation relay test experience.
  • Level 3 or 4 NETA or NICET certification.
  • Power distribution field experience in servicing, maintaining, and testing electrical power distribution equipment.
Skills
  • Knowledge and practice of safety precautions related to working with electrical and electronic equipment.
