Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (MRI)

Summary The VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System is recruiting for a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (MRI). The position functions in the Imaging Service. This role does not require a 2‑page resume, and the required documents are listed below.
Qualifications- Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
- United States Citizenship:
Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. - Certification:
All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology – Radiography (ARRT) (R). - Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include CT, MRI, or Mammography duties performed independently.
- Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and passed the designated examination.
- In modalities requiring advanced certification, technologists without advanced certification may receive on‑job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist.
- Education:
Completion of a full‑time training course of at least 24 months in a post‑high‑school diagnostic radiologic technology program – evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree accredited by JRCERT or other recognized agencies. - English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) – and 7407(d).
- May qualify based on the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who meet the criteria).
- Experience:
At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS‑8) directly related to the position, demonstrating the clinical competencies described at that level.
- Knowledge of calibration parameters and the ability to make adjustments as needed.
- Knowledge of patient’s clinical record, diagnosis, and laboratory results.
- Ability to monitor patient’s physiologic changes during the procedure and keep the radiologist informed.
- Skill in using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy in dealings with patients, staff, and visitors.
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, including cross‑sectional anatomy, recognizing unusual images, and determining proper positioning.
- Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while performing complex scans and procedures.
- Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers.
- Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure.
- Knowledge of basic first aid, basic life support practices related to radiography.
- Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods, and universal precautions.
- Knowledge of pre‑procedural, procedural, and post‑procedural care of patients.
- Preferred Experience:
Current MRI experience – scanning as a full‑time technologist for 5 years or more. - Preferred Experience:
Advanced Imaging – Cardiac, Breast, Prostate, Elastography, Perfusion, MR Angiography, and Spectroscopy. - Physical Requirements:
Walking, pushing, and lifting of patients and equipment; lifting devices for heavy patients; awareness of all who enter the MRI room; pre‑employment physical and drug testing required.
- Knowledge of superconducting magnets, physics of superconducting magnets, and their relation to human anatomy in medical imaging.
- Education on safety factors governing a magnetic environment, including equipment, patients, and visitors.
- Specialized knowledge of cross‑sectional anatomy and radio‑frequency surface coils.
- Basic magnetic resonance safety program duties.
- Knowledge of contrast media, power injectors, and PACS.
- Advanced ARRT (MR) certification required for independent duties in this subspecialty.
