Job Purpose And Overview
The Deputy Bailiff is responsible for the safety and security of the Cleveland Municipal Court, Housing Division. The Deputy Bailiff is also responsible for processing and enforcing the orders of the Court.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe following duties indicate the general nature and level of work performed by the Deputy Bailiff. They are not designed to contain or be interpreted as a comprehensive inventory of all duties, responsibilities and qualifications required of this position. Other duties may be required or assigned at any time.
- Secure court sessions by providing protection and assistance for Court personnel and the public.
- Provide assistance to Judge, Magistrate(s), or Staff Attorney(s) in conducting Court hearings.
- Monitor virtual hearings held by the Judge and Magistrates.
- Serve and enforce orders of the Court.
- Process Court documents including, but not limited to, attachments, evictions, contempt citations, criminal warrants, summonses and subpoenas.
- Assist in handling of case files and their presentation in hearings before the Court.
- Escort defendants and other individuals to the bench and/or other Court offices.
- Escort and secure prisoners.
- Supervise Court‑ordered move‑outs.
- Conduct searches of the interior and exterior of a premise at the time the move‑out is executed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Court.

- Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission (OPOTC) Basic Bailiff Academy/Private Security Firearms Training certified.
- Ability to pass psychological evaluation to carry a firearm.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Court procedures and policies.
- Proficiency in operating a personal computer and using, or being able to learn, Microsoft Office products such as Word, Outlook, Excel, Zoom and Webex.
- Ability to effectively and professionally communicate verbally and in writing in English to diverse audiences.
- Demonstrate dependability, reliability, and excellent attendance record.
High School graduate of equivalent required. Bachelor or Associate Degree in Criminal Justice or Law Enforcement or related field preferred. Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission (OPOTC) and/or Basic Bailiff Academy/Private Security Firearms Training preferred. Valid Ohio Driver’s License required.
Physical Demands and Work EnvironmentThe primary function of the Housing Court Deputy Bailiff is security and may involve physical contact. Deputy Bailiffs must meet the physical demands of the job including, but not limited to, stand or walk at least 6 hours per day, and the ability to push, pull, or lift at least thirty (30) pounds at a given time. - Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with judges, Court employees, lawyers, outside agencies, businesses, and the general public.
- Ability to maintain sensitive and confidential information.
- Must be conscious of and sensitive to the diversity within the Court’s jurisdiction and be able to interact professionally with this diverse population of people from many different geographic, socioeconomic, religious, racial, and ethnic backgrounds on a regular basis.
