  • Job Title: Animal Enrichment and Wellbeing Associate

  • Job Relationship: Reports to the Animal Enrichment and Wellbeing Supervisor; works closely with the Volunteer Manager; supports volunteers for various roles in the Animal Wellness and Flow Departments.
Essential Job Functions
  • Ensure scheduled dog play groups and enrichment activities are performed daily and that all necessary support staff and safety equipment are available.
  • Maintain signage, documentation, and kennel environment for the canine population, including relocating dogs for behavioral advantage and creating daily enrichment plans.
  • Provide adoption counseling and facilitate dog‑dog interactions for prospective adopters.
  • Clean and maintain canine enrichment areas (_robotic perches, play yards).
  • Assist in developing and implementing new protocols or programs to enhance animal quality of life.
  • Serve as the primary contact for dog, cat, and small mammal enrichment, coordinating with the supervisor to ensure daily enrichment tailored to each animal’s needs.
  • Train staff and Animal Care Associates (ACAs) in年至 safe animal handling, disease control, and enrichment protocols.
  • Assist in transport, intake, and evaluation of dogs received from other agencies and conduct behavioral assessments.
  • Perform routine medical care including vaccinations, worming, flea treatments, and blood tests.
  • Ensure a Fear‑Free approach in shelter operations and during animal transitions.
  • Stay updated on organizational communications through staff meetings and the News Hound.
  • Provide professional volunteer supervision, communication, and feedback; oversee animal‑based group volunteer programs.
  • Represent the APL professionally at all times, maintaining quality service to customers, volunteers, and staff.
  • Follow safety guidelines, promptly addressing any risk or non‑compliance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including reporting special needs cases, promoting inter‑departmental cooperation, performing euthanasia (if certified), maintaining cleaning equipment, and opening/closing the building.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
  • Prior demonstrable experience in dog behavior, health, handling, and care.
  • Supervisory or leadership experience in a professional or volunteer setting.
  • Availability to work days when the Behavior Specialist is not scheduled (currently Sunday and Monday).
Knowledge and Skills
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast‑paced, multi‑person environment.
  • Knowledge of all volunteer positions, animal breeds, behavior, and health」は、識别 illness preferred.
  • Ability to safely handle animals with health and behavioral challenges.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, public speaking, and customer service skills.
  • Proficiency with PC software, including Microsoft Excel, Word, and Pet Point shelter software.

  • Flexibility to work a weekend and evening schedule.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to high standards of animal care.
  • Fear‑Free Certified or certified within six months of hire.

Working Conditions

Operations are continuous, seven days a week. The role involves exposure to animals with varied health and temperament concerns, high noise levels, zoonotic diseases examinants of cleaning agents, and frequent physical movement and manual handling of animals up to 50 lbs. The candidate must maintain clear communication with staff and volunteers and be able to detect and respond to potentially dangerous animal behavior.
