University Security Officer
John Carroll University is seeking a dedicated University Security Officer to support the safety, security, and wellbeing of students, staff, faculty, and the broader community. The role is guided by the university’s mission, vision, core values, and the University Police Department’s (JCUPD) mission and values.
Pay RangeBase pay: $16.00/hr – $19.50/hr (depending on qualifications and experience). Additional benefits include health and dental insurance, paid vacation, personal, sick, and mission time, holidays, a 403(b) retirement plan, life insurance, and tuition remission for the employee, spouse, and children.
SummaryThe primary responsibilities of the Security Officer involve responding to emergencies, maintaining campus safety, and providing support during campus events. The Officer works independently in daily decision‑making under the general guidance of the JCUPD and university mission. Interactions with internal constituents (students, faculty, staff, contractors) and external constituents (parents, neighbors, merchants, government agencies) are critical and may have significant implications for campus operations.
Job Responsibilities- Respond to and assist the on‑duty police officer with emergencies, including criminal, medical, fire, and other campus emergencies.
- Produce non‑criminal reports that are clear, concise, complete, and correct.
- Conduct proactive campus patrols, employing a community policing approach. Engage with campus constituents through positive interactions and maintain an active, high‑visibility presence.
- Address suspicious activity in an unbiased and safe manner.
- Ensure the physical security of campus property by identifying potential hazards and taking remediation measures.
- Provide support for campus activities, including event security planning, parking, and transportation logistics.
- Enforce campus parking rules.
- Assist with smooth operation of gate attendants, shuttle services, and emergency services, providing guidance and support as needed.
- Offer a range of services to the campus community such as lost & found, room lockout, vehicle jump‑starts/lock‑outs, fingerprinting, and after‑hours plant troubleshooting.
- Assist with CCTV and alarm monitoring as required.
- No convictions of violent crime or offenses involving the use or threat of deadly weapons.
- Valid Ohio driver’s license with a good driving record (no more than two point‑violations or equivalents in the last 3 years, and no convictions for six‑point violations or felony traffic violations in the last 5 years).
- Successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation, drug screen, and psychological testing.
- Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
- Excellent customer service skills with the ability to respond to others with tact and diplomacy.
- Ability to work effectively in a diverse, multicultural university environment.
- Capability to de‑escalate difficult situations and respond appropriately under stress or danger within legal and policy limits.
- Commitment to supporting John Carroll’s mission to inspire individuals to excel in learning, leadership, and service.
- Experience in decision‑making, problem resolution, and de‑escalation of difficult situations.
- Associate degree or completion of relevant college coursework.
- Position requires in‑person work at the University Heights campus.
- Varied hours and shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Standard schedule is 40 hours per week on the third (overnight) shift; overtime may be required.
- May be called to work in emergency or exigent situations.
- Exposure to typical security hazards such as first‑response duties, physical altercations, and extreme weather conditions.
- Ability to run, walk, stand, or sit for extended periods.
- Capacity to withstand extreme climate exposure and health and safety hazards.
- Strength, endurance, and flexibility to handle equipment up to 25 lbs., including lifting, pulling, pushing, and climbing stairs or running as needed.
- Physical ability to restrain or detain where necessary and appropriate.
- Manual dexterity to operate radios, telephones, handcuffs, cameras, and motor vehicles while performing multiple tasks.
