Join the Cuyahoga County team as a Correction Officer. This full‑time position places you in a 24/7 operational setting, supervising inmate safety and security throughout the Correction Center.
Base Pay Range$26.50/hr – $26.50/hr

Reports To: Corrections Corporal
Employment: Full Time
FLSA: Non‑Exempt
Starting Wage: $26.50 per hour plus comprehensive benefits
- Manage and monitor inmates during all daily activities.
- Observe inmate behavior and make appropriate referrals.
- Conduct inmate searches and enumerate inmates.
- Distribute meals, commissary, hygiene items, and mail.
- Report unusual incidents orally and in documentation.
- Escort inmates through the Correction Center.
- Complete required routine forms, logs, and reports.
- Operate safety and security equipment, including keys, alarm devices, fire extinguishers, breathing apparatus, fire and riot hoses, electrical control panels, and other mechanical equipment.
- Work mandatory additional hours as required.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Must be 21 years old and have no felony, serious misdemeanor, or pending criminal cases.
- Knowledge of inmate supervision in a controlled environment, including security measures and safety practices associated with felony detention.
- Ability to read, understand, and apply Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department policies and procedures.
- Strong written communication skills and ability to report accurately.
- Follow supervisor and administrative directives promptly and effectively.
- Pass a 180‑day probationary period.
- Cuyahoga County covers Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) training costs.

This is a competitive, classified position. The Person nel Review Commission (PRC) will screen applications for minimum qualifications, then invite qualified candidates to a civil service examination. Top exam candidates advance to the eligibility list, from which the hiring department selects candidates for interview and job offer. Successful applicants must pass a drug screen and background check. Prior convictions are evaluated case‑by‑case according to County Code Chapter 306.
