Manager, Safety & Security

Under the supervision of the Director of Safety and Security, the Manager, Safety and Security will provide strategic direction, leadership, and coordination for safety and security operations of Breakthrough Public Schools (BPS). The position is responsible for the direct management of all in-house security personnel, the development and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures across all BPS campuses, the management of emergency plans and reporting, and providing ongoing training to security personnel, in addition to performing related work as assigned.

Functions
  • Develop, memorialize, and implement Standard Operating Procedures across all BPS schools;
  • Oversee BPS security personnel, including conducting performance evaluations;
  • Lead security personnel huddles at BPS locations, hold 1:1 coaching/performance management meetings with all security personnel;
  • Conduct monthly safety inspections/audits at each school, recommend and implement solutions;
  • Along with the Director, serve as a liaison between BPS, families, and law enforcement;
  • Support on‑site security personnel in monitoring, completing, and reporting incidents, threat assessments, and restraints;
  • Plan, implement, and record training programs for all security personnel;
  • Coordinate access control, security cameras, and communications systems (e.g., radios);
  • Actively review safety and security data and serve on BPS Safety & Security Committee;
  • Perform general administrative work as required, including ordering all security supplies, submitting purchase orders, managing security uniform ordering, and all security‑related vendor invoices.
Minimum Qualifications
  • An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience will be considered. A typical successful candidate will demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the essential functions of the job, which is typically acquired through one of the following paths:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, Business Management, or a related field;
  • OR at least five (5) years of relevant experience in law enforcement, as a school resource officer, or in school safety management.
  • At least five (5) years of experience in a leadership, supervisory capacity, or program development/management within a relevant field is required.
  • Experience working and leading in a K-8 school environment is preferred.
Licensure And Certification(s)
  • CPI certified instructor or willingness to obtain certification within 90 days of hire;
  • Advanced training or certification in safety and security preferred.
  • Candidate must possess a valid driver’s license with a driving record in accordance with the BPS’s acceptable guidelines.
Technical Skills And Knowledge
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and technical support skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to work with cameras and access control systems/platforms.
  • Ability to keep information confidential.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Drive.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment with speed, precision, and accuracy.
Work Environment And Physical Demands
  • Ability to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time while conducting inspections or patrolling campuses.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally (e.g., moving supplies, equipment).
  • Requires frequent travel between BPS school campuses within the Cleveland area.
  • Exposure to various weather conditions when moving between buildings or responding to external incidents.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations which may require physical exertion.
