Job Overview
NERC Correction Officer at the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC) – responsible for maintaining control and ensuring safety and security of the institution, inmates, staff, and public.
Responsibilities- Enforce rules, regulations, policies, and procedures to maintain safety and security.
- Supervise and direct inmate activity in assigned areas of the facility.
- Assure assigned area is clean, safe, and secure.
- Monitor and operate security controls, equipment, and computers.
- Operate automotive vehicles in perimeter security and transport inmates.
- Conduct inmate counts, security rounds, and searches.
- Complete required reports and serve on committees.
- Prevent escapes or incidents that threaten security.
- When necessary, use physical force, unarmed self‑defense, firearms, or other force to detain or secure inmates.
High school diploma or G.E.D.; must have a valid driver’s license. Positions assigned to transportation section may require a commercial driver’s license. Applicants must successfully pass the correction officer assessment within the past 24 months or be a current ODRC employee previously certified in the correction officer position. Probationary period is 365 days.
CompensationStep 1 salary: $24.16 per hour. After 6 months of employment, move to Step 2 salary: $24.86 per hour. Earn an additional $0.60 per hour when working 2nd or 3rd shift.
