Location: Clinton Charter Township

POSITION SUMMARY
Supports the teacher and student to ensure the best possible learning experience for special education children in a safe and secure environment while maintaining confidentiality.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
(These duties are essential functions under the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA)).

  • Assist an individual student one‑on‑one, with small groups, or in the classroom under the teacher’s direction.
  • Assist student with completing academic tasks.
  • Engage student with instructional activities developed by the teacher (reading, writing, math, spelling, life skills).
  • Implement behavior management plans, including Crisis Intervention and Prevention (CPI) training.
  • Monitor, intervene, and redirect student behaviors; deescalate behavior.
  • Assist student with personal needs (hygiene, diapering, toileting, clothing).
  • Familiarize yourself with individual student requirements and/or behavior plan.
  • Collect data on behavior, academics, instruction.
  • Participate in professional development.
  • Communicate with community, staff, and students to answer questions and disseminate information.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience working with children – required.
  • Experience working with special education students – preferred.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • School policies and safety regulations – required.
  • Working knowledge of computers – preferred.

SKILLS:

  • Good communication skills – required.
  • Adaptability to learn – required.
  • Patience – required.

ABILITIES:

  • Adapt to a variety of teaching skills – required.
  • Handle emotional and physical challenges – required.
  • Be caring, understanding, patient, friendly toward students – required.
  • Apply common sense to carry out written, oral, or diagram instructions – required.
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, and community – required.
  • Read and interpret school policies and handbook – required.
  • Present information in one‑on‑one, small group, and classroom situations – required.
  • Physically manage student behaviors and equipment – required.
  • Problem solve and deal with a variety of concrete variables where standardization is limited – required.
  • Work in a high‑demanding, stressful environment while maintaining composure – required.
  • Complete any necessary training to perform job responsibilities – required.
  • Follow outlined behavioral management plan or instruction programs – required.
  • Read, write, and communicate effectively in English – required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The employee must sit, walk, or stand for long periods, run after students, stoop and bend to assist with toileting and diapering, lift up to 50 pounds, and push or pull up to 90 pounds. Physical strength, agility, dexterity, and mobility are required. Assists with movement of students with special needs, including on buses and field trips.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Moderate to loud noise level.
