The Registered Nurse (RN) is a vital member of the interdisciplinary team, responsible for addressing the physical, medical, psychosocial, emotional, and spiritual needs of hospice patients and their families facing terminal illness and bereavement. The RN coordinates care, conducts ongoing assessments, and implements the interdisciplinary plan of care.

Job Responsibilities
  • Manage cases and supervise nursing staff, including VITAS-employed and contracted personnel.
  • Follow VITAS policies and standards, practicing within the scope of RN licensure and hospice eligibility requirements.
  • Report any practice outside scope to management.
  • Supervise delegated nursing tasks to aides, practical/vocational nurses, and volunteers.
  • Perform comprehensive assessments to provide end-of-life symptom palliation.
  • Identify and utilize resources and referrals, such as PT, OT, pharmacy, and supplies.
  • Complete timely documentation of care events.
  • Educate and train patients, families, and caregivers, including pain management.
  • Participate in patient care and team meetings, providing shift reports and effective communication.
  • Support bereavement efforts and participate in on-call rotations.
  • Develop and follow individualized care plans with the IDG.
  • Obtain physician orders when necessary and evaluate service outcomes.
  • Delegate tasks appropriately and ensure compliance with safety and infection control standards.
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and professional development activities.
  • Act as a patient and family advocate, handling complaints and conflict resolution.
  • Job Requirements
    • Valid RN license in the practicing state.
    • At least two years of recent hospice, home health, or community health nursing experience.
    • Reliable transportation and available telephone.
    Physical Demands and Qualifications

    Must be able to lift objects over 20 pounds, assist with patient transfers, stand or walk for extended periods, and perform related physical activities. Vision and mobility requirements are specified.

    Additional qualifications include professional licensure, experience, and the ability to meet physical demands.
