Purpose of Position

Under general supervision, protects and serves the citizens of the City of Clinton by responding to specialized fire, medical, and rescue operations, as well as other calls for service. Operates as both a firefighter and a driver operator. Drives, operates, and maintains firefighting and rescue apparatus and equipment. Participates in various firefighting suppression and rescue operations. Participates in public relations events and performs related work as assigned.

Position reports to the Shift Captain.

Essential Job Functions
  • Lieutenant Functions
  • Assists the Fire Shift Captain in supervising Sub-station assigned personnel, to ensure the department’s compliance with all applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations, and safety standards.
  • Supervises subordinate personnel through the chain of command and answers to the Fire Shift Captain.
  • May act as the shift supervisor if the Shift Captain is on leave or assigned to other duties as deemed necessary by the Department Chief.
  • Working with other shift Senior Engineers, responsible for the creation, implementation, and documentation of shift and department training. Acts as the shift’s Training Officer.
  • Ability to evaluate shift training needs, create training objectives correlated to NFPA, department policies and procedures, and or medical best practices, create documented lesson plans for consistency, instruct shift personnel, and use created evaluation tools that capture personnel’s capabilities.
  • Drives, operates, and maintains firefighting apparatus and equipment on an assigned basis; operates pumps; uses ladders, axes, shovels, and other firefighting equipment. Responds to automobile accidents, rescue calls, and administers emergency medical aid to victims as required.
  • Responds to fire alarms; locates and extinguishes fires with suppression equipment; helps to lay and connect hose; operates hose nozzles and directs fog and water streams; participates in rescue and salvage operations; cleans and prepares firefighting equipment for re-entry service; may assist in conducting fire inspections.
  • May assist in conducting major and minor fire-cause investigations and preliminary investigations at the scenes of fires; administers first-aid to persons; may appear as a witness in court for fire-related and/or arson charges.
  • Follows standard operating guidelines.
  • Participates in a continuing program of training and instruction and attendance at scheduled training drills and classes. Some training classes may require travel and overnight stays.
  • This position is second to the Fire Captain, and this position may act as the shift Captain in the Captain’s absence.
  • Performs assignments and instructions in accordance with Departmental rules and regulations, which are provided in general terms by a superior officer who reviews work methods and results through reports, observations, and discussions.
  • This position shall supervise and be responsible for the Fire substation, supervise assigned staff, be responsible for their assigned shifts' training, and function as the shifts' training officer.
