About
Masters-at-Arms (MAs) are security specialists who perform anti-terrorism, force protection, physical security, and law enforcement duties on land and y may operate force protection watercraft, direct investigations, control base access points, or supervise K9 assets.
Responsibilities- Conduct waterborne security patrols and interdiction operations.
- Perform U.S. Customs inspections and base security patrols.
- Implement aircraft and flight line security standards.
- Conduct law enforcement operations and river security missions.
- Provide protective services to high-ranking dignitaries and government officials.
- Supervise K‑9 explosive and narcotics detection operations.
- Perform physical security inspections and preliminary investigations into UCMJ violations.
- Organize and train security force personnel.
- Operate brigs (jails) and conduct crime prevention programs.
MAs may serve at shore stations in the U.S. and overseas, aboard ships, or as part of maritime expeditionary security squadrons. Their work environment varies widely depending on individual assignments.
Work EnvironmentMAs spend about 60% of their time assigned to fleet units and 40% to shore stations over a 20‑year career. They may serve in expeditionary security locations worldwide, providing landward and seaward security in support of Joint Service operations.
Training & AdvancementAfter completing Recruit Training, MAs attend a 10‑week A school in San Antonio, TX, where they learn anti-terrorism techniques, armed sentry/post‑standing techniques, crime prevention, military and civil law, physical fitness, communications, first aid, firearms deployment, and physical restraint techniques. Promotion opportunities are excellent for motivated personnel.
Education OpportunitiesMAs can earn college credits through the American Council on Education for courses taken in this rating. The USNCC also offers degree programs that support educational and career advancement.
Qualifications & Requirements- Be people‑oriented, dedicated, resourceful, and versatile.
- Possess strong writing and speaking skills, a good memory, and the ability to conduct detailed work while maintaining accurate records.
