Philosophy Instructor (Full‑Time, Tenure‑Track) Clovis Community College
Clovis Community College invites applications for a full‑time, tenure‑track Philosophy Instructor. The District may fill more than one position from this pool.
Essential FunctionsWe value equity and diverse student populations. The successful candidate will be an equity‑minded leader committed to student success through collaboration with faculty, staff, administration, students, and community partners.
Responsibilities- Teaching a full schedule of developmental and transfer level Philosophy courses as assigned;
- Maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position and currency in teaching philosophy;
- Using a variety of pedagogies and integrating a wide range of instructional delivery systems including innovative and creative uses of technology for face‑to‑face, on‑line, and/or hybrid formats;
- Communicating effectively with students;
- Using effective teaching methods appropriate to the subject matter;
- Adhering to institutionally approved curriculum course outlines of record;
- Evaluating student progress through tests and examinations, written assignments, oral responses, etc. in keeping with course objectives;
- Providing course syllabi to students;
- Maintaining classroom records in accordance with District policy;
- Turning in all required student grading and evaluation reports in a timely manner;
- Serving on and attending department, college, and district committees as needed;
- Participating in program review, student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning;
- Providing instruction in Philosophy in a variety of instructional settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, on‑line or off‑campus and large group instruction classes as needed;
- Otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122; and
- Other duties as assigned.
- Master’s in Philosophy;
- Bachelor’s in Philosophy and Master’s in Humanities or Religious Studies;
- A valid California Community College Credential; or
- The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).
- Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility;
- Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
- Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds including students with disabilities;
- Willingness to examine and remediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
- Related work and professional experience;
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff;
- Demonstrated ability to work with computers, and other technologies, which are utilized in providing high-quality instruction and support to students;
- Extent of involvement and/or knowledge of ethnically diverse communities;
- Extent and breadth of previous teaching experience at the post‑secondary level in Philosophy, including large group instruction and online teaching, if any;
- Extent of graduate level coursework in Philosophy (esp. Metaphysics, Epistemology, Ethics, Logic, and the History of Philosophy), and Religion (esp. Comparative Religions and Philosophy of Religion);
- Experience teaching at the post‑secondary level;
- Breadth of teaching experience in Philosophy;
- Certificate to teach in an on‑line or hybrid environment;
- Experience and/or investment in collaborative instruction, curriculum development and student support;
- A collegial and amicable instructor who is interested in collaboration with their colleagues and the wider community;
- Extent of related campus/community involvement; and
- Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.
178 duty days per year, prorated based on start of assignment.
Salary and BenefitsAnnual salary $71,054 – $106,970 based on experience; doctoral stipend $2,419; fringe benefits include medical, dental, vision, and life insurance; membership in CalSTRS.
