Domestic Team Leader
Lead housekeeping and portering teams to deliver a safe, high-standard cleaning service across the hospital, with a strong focus on infection control and national cleaning specifications.
Role detailsHospital-based role on a 7-day rotational rota, including on-call and night shifts Monday to Thursday, offered as a 12-week temporary contract with the potential to move to a permanent position, on a Band 3 salary scale from £28,051 (£14.50 per hour) to £30,274 (£15.69 per hour) plus additional payments for unsocial hours.
The roleAs the Domestic Team Leader you will oversee the day-to-day housekeeping and portering services, ensuring standards meet the National Specification for Cleaning Services and hospital housekeeping requirements. The role exists to maintain a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors, reducing healthcare associated infection through effective cleaning, disinfection and decontamination practices. You will support the Housekeeping & Portering Operations Manager by supervising staff, maintaining records and helping to implement agreed departmental programmes and systems.
Whatyou'll be doing
- Supervising housekeeping and portering staff day to day, including rota management, workload planning and short-term staffing adjustments.
- Ensuring all allocated areas meet hospital housekeeping specifications and the National Domestic Framework for Cleaning Services.
- Coordinating with ward managers and other departments to arrange access, schedule work and prioritise cleaning requests, including isolation rooms.
- Organising disinfection and decontamination activities in response to infection, in line with hospital policies and infection control guidance.
- Training staff in cleaning techniques, equipment use, infection control, Health & Safety, COSHH and moving and handling procedures.
- Managing records and administration such as timesheets, payroll returns, rotas, sickness absence reviews, appraisals and quality monitoring audits.
- Previous supervisory experience in housekeeping or a similar domestic services environment.
- Extensive housekeeping experience, ideally within a hospital or comparable setting.
- Knowledge of infection control standards, the National Cleaning Specification and Domestic Framework education for cleaning practices.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to plan, prioritise and direct work to meet service demands.
- Excellent communication, persuasion, influencing and negotiation skills, including handling sensitive staffing issues.
- Good working knowledge of computer systems and office software for administration and record-keeping.
- Health & Safety and COSHH knowledge, including safe handling of cleaning products, waste and spillages, and moving and handling skills.
- Physically able to operate cleaning equipment and work in busy clinical environments with significant equipment and activity.
