The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is looking for a skilled and motivated professional to join our team as a Heavy Mechanic in Cody, Wyoming
. This is a hands-on role where your expertise will help keep Wyoming’s roads safe and its transportation system running smoothly.
In this position, you will conduct a wide variety of preventive maintenance and repairs on diesel engines, automotive equipment, and other self-propelled or towed machinery. You will also perform safety inspections, diagnose problems using technical manuals, and rig or fabricate new equipment to meet district standards. Additional responsibilities include creating repair orders, managing shop inventory, and designing or fabricating specialized parts for tractors, mowers, and other machinery.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys problem-solving, precision work, and variety in their day-to-day responsibilities.

- Conducts a wide variety of preventive maintenance and/or repairs on various diesel and automotive equipment, along with other self-propelled or towed equipment.
- Performs safety inspections on all types of automotive and diesel equipment.
- Reads and interprets technical manuals to diagnose and correct problems with vehicles and equipment.
- Rigs and fabricates new equipment to district standards.
- Creates repair orders.
- Responsible for the inventory of the shop, equipment, and supplies.
- Designs and fabricates parts for tractors, mowers, and machinery for specialized applications.
Preference will be given to applicants who have completed any equipment certification exams. Welder Certification card for FH&VFillet and FH&V Grove 3/4 welds is a plus. Agency requires the successful applicant to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License. Must pass a series of seven fundamental tests, including Electricity, Engines, Hydraulics, Power Trains, Administrative Procedures, Rigging, and General Shop.
Knowledge- Knowledge of methods and techniques of automotive maintenance and repair.
- Knowledge of electronic principles and diagnostic tools.
- Knowledge of light and heavy-duty automotive equipment and its parts (i.e., hydraulics, hydrostatics, drive trains, gas, and diesel engine overhauls).
- Knowledge of grease and oil specifications.
- Knowledge of general servicing of equipment.
- Knowledge of policies and safe work procedures.
Education & Experience Substitution: 2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Heavy Mechanics)
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Ability to obtain and maintain a CDL

Education: Associate's Degree
Experience: 0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Heavy Mechanics)
