Department Perioperative Services - Operating Room

Position Summary

The Day Surgery OR RN is responsible for ensuring patient safety and supporting surgical excellence in the Day Surgery Operating Room, where procedures span a range of specialties including General Surgery, ENT, Orthopedics, Podiatry, Urology, Gynecology, and Plastics. This role involves assessing individual patients and procedures, anticipating the needs of the surgical team, and maintaining a sterile and safe environment. The RN utilizes specialized nursing knowledge and judgment to deliver both direct and indirect patient care in a fast-paced ambulatory surgical setting.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates OR preparation with team to ensure cases start on time
  • Performs assessment of patient for specific nursing care needed; plans care to ensure patient safety
  • Directs and assists in carrying out safe aseptic & sterile techniques and procedures
  • Directs and oversees the activities being performed in the operating room
  • Prepares OR with the necessary equipment and supplies for specific patient and procedure
  • Arranges instruments according to routine for a given procedure
  • Ensures proper care of instruments, supplies, sterilization, and storage of equipment; checks for cleanliness and proper working condition
  • Assists in stocking, preparation, and waste management of supplies; secures emergency equipment and supplies as needed
  • Assists in transporting patients to OR and checks patient record for appropriate pre-op preparation and procedures (i.e., lab, x-ray, H&P, appropriate consent)
  • Performs and/or directs appropriate surgical prep
  • Completes documentation for OR records, laboratory requisitions, and patient chart including medications and physician orders
  • Oversees and assists with the proper, safe positioning of the patient
  • Identifies, labels, and cares for all surgery specimens properly
  • Scrubs, gowns, and gloves members of the surgery team following aseptic techniques
  • Maintains sterile field throughout the surgery procedure
  • Performs clean-up following procedures, as well as general environmental services duties
  • Provides assistance to team members, physicians, and anesthesia personnel as needed
  • Reviews physicians’ preference cards and updates as needed
  • Participates in ongoing committees and other educational programs to enhance patient care
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
  • Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the field
  • Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
  • Regular and predictable attendance is an essential job function
  • Competent to meet age specific needs of the unit assigned
  • Schedule
    :
    Monday–Friday, 40 hours/week
  • Arrival Time
    :
    Currently 6:30 AM; shifting to ~6:45 AM in October
  • Operating Hours
    :
    Expanding from 7:15 AM–3:00 PM to 7:30 AM–5:00 PM
  • Facility
    : 4 operating rooms, expanding to full utilization

Requirements and Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate of a nationally accredited Nursing program required
  • State of Idaho Registered Nurse or licensure pending as documented by temporary licensure OR current RN licensure from a state participating in the "multistate privilege to practice" compact with Idaho
  • BLS required
  • ACLS required within 6 months of hire
  • Minimum 1 year experience in operative setting preferred
  • ASC experience preferred

Working Conditions

  • Typical equipment used in a clinical job
  • Must be able to stoop, crouch or bend
  • Must be able to push, pull, or transfer heavy equipment
  • Must be able to lift or move up to 35 lbs
