Job GoalThe Director of Transportation provides leadership and oversight for all district transportation operations, ensuring the safe, efficient, and effective transportation of students and staff with a focus on customer service. This role manages personnel and training, develops and monitors budgets, ensures regulatory compliance, and maintains high safety standards across all functions. This is a leadership role that may require availability during early mornings, evenings, or weekends in response to emergencies or operational‑needs.
Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Business, Management, or related field preferred (or commensurate experience in a related field)
- At least 5 years of relevant experience in transportation or logistics management preferred
- At least 5 years of supervisory experience preferred
- Proven track record of strong customer service skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Intermediate or greater proficiency with computers, office software, and transportation systems
- Current CDL credentials
- Lead, organize, and manage the district's transportation operations with sound decision‑making, including maintenance, scheduling, and personnel supervision
- Provide effective positive leadership that fosters positive relationships with staff, students, parents, and the community
- Provide and model excellent customer service, creative problem‑solving, and de‑escalation skills
- Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations related to transportation services
- Attract, retain, supervise, and evaluate transportation staff, facilitate training, and resolve personnel issues
- Develop, review, and adjust bus routes, stops, and special trip logistics; ensure safe and efficient routing
- Ensure accurate maintenance records, approve payroll documents, manage procurement, and oversee the transportation budget
- Oversee preventive and routine vehicle maintenance, licensing, and district vehicle documentation
- Collaborate with school and department administrators to coordinate student bus placements and address behavioral concerns
- Provide timely assessments of road conditions, especially during inclement weather, and assist with emergency route planning
- Uphold student discipline procedures related to transportation in accordance with district policy
- Support the implementation of transportation safety programs for staff and students
- Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities that are legal, moral, and ethical as the district may assign
- Ability to communicate clearly and understand verbal conversations
- Visual capacity to read, write, and monitor student and staff activities
- Manual dexterity for computer and office equipment use
- Physical mobility to work in varied environments and travel within the district
- Ability to drive a commercial vehicle
