WASTEWATER COLLECTIONS APPRENTICE UTILITY 1ST YEAR
Description:
This is the entry level class in the Wastewater Utility Maintenance series. This class is distinguished from the Wastewater Utility Worker II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series. Incumbents are not expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgment on matters related to established procedures and guidelines as are incumbents allocated to the journey level.
As an entry level class, employees may have limited or no directly related work experience.
Receives immediate supervision from Wastewater Utility Worker Foreman. Exercises no supervision.
Essential Functions- Assist in the performance of wastewater construction and maintenance activities; participate in the repair and maintenance of sewer lines including rodding sewer lines, and assist in sewer taps.
- Assist in the maintenance and repair of sewer lines and manholes; locate sewer lines, replace sewer lines; clean drainage ditches and storm drains; flush utility lines; clean man holes.
- Assist in the maintenance and repair of sewer lift stations including general appearance.
- Operate a variety of construction equipment including tractors, trucks, loaders, backhoe and a variety of hand tools; use safety equipment and board machine; perform preventive maintenance on equipment and vehicles; maintain the condition of equipment.
- Assist in locating underground utility lines and cables including sewer lines prior to excavation.
- Perform regular testing of equipment and machinery to maintain quality assurance and high performance.
- Assist in the performance of sewer tests including smoke and optical inspections.
- Respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints.
- Maintain and clean shop area.
- Respond to emergency situations related to the maintenance and operations of the city s utilities.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
- Safe handling of traffic in construction zones.
- General construction, maintenance, and repair related to wastewater collection systems.
- Wastewater treatment, distribution and collection activities.
- English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
- Equipment and tools used in the area of work assigned.
- Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
- Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations.
- Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled wastewater collection maintenance, construction and repair work.
- Operate a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner.
- Perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions.
- Repair wastewater control and pumping equipment; perform heavy manual labor; understand and follow oral and written instructions; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, laws, and regulations; establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Follow all safety rules and regulations of the department; maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of duties, which may include walking, standing, lifting, heavy manual labor, travel, bending, stooping, crawling, or kneeling; conduct inspections.
- Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception for making observations, reading and writing, and operating equipment.
- Maintain mental capacity to make sound decisions, communicate clearly, and respond to questions.
- Work environment and conditions: exposure to dirt, dust, harsh weather, noise, potentially dangerous equipment, and confined spaces; travel to various work locations.
- Experience:
No experience is required. - Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Maintain apprentice program adopted by the City of Coffeyville.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid commercial driver s license.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, the appropriate step in the apprentice program towards Journeyman Certificate.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, appropriate confined space training.
- Travel from site to site; field environment; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, and inclement weather conditions; work around heavy construction equipment.
