Building Inspector

Position:
Building Inspector (RBI) – Colchester

We are looking for a dedicated Building Inspector to join our Building & Real Estate division. The role involves inspecting construction sites at various stages, advising on regulatory requirements, and working collaboratively with architects, builders and developers to ensure safe, structurally sound, and code-compliant buildings.

• Conduct comprehensive site inspections and regulatory assessments, reviewing structural, architectural, mechanical designs and building materials to ensure compliance with Building Regulations and allied legislation.
• Supervise inspection activities, enforce regulatory compliance, oversee lower‑class RBIs and graduate trainees, interpret national and local building regulations (including fire safety, energy efficiency, accessibility and environmental requirements) and issue formal notices for compliance breaches under the Building Safety Act 2022.
• Prepare detailed compliance documentation and consultancy services, producing inspection reports, certificates and regulatory approval documents, maintaining accurate records and assisting clients with Building Regulations advice when SOCOTEC is not acting as the Registered Building Control Approver.

• Professional qualification and regulatory registration at senior level – membership of RICS or CABE or equivalent (or suitable experience), CPD compliance, RBI registration at an appropriate level (3G/3H).
• Excellent communication and client relationship management skills – ability to work effectively with clients and deliver excellent client care across all interactions.
• Self‑starting problem‑solver with technical expertise – ability to work independently and as part of large project teams, analyse complex issues, develop and implement solutions, and keep up to date with building code and industry best practices.
