We have a new vision to modernise our services, approaches and create the best team cultures. Colchester is Britain’s First City, and Britain’sNewest City. A wealth of heritage buildings, coastline and Constable countryside surrounds a modern City that is rapidly changing to match our thriving population growth.

To meet the demands of population and business growth we are seeking to expand the Food and Safety Team to meet demands.

Exciting opportunities exist for enthusiastic and motivated individuals who have a desire for personal growth, continual challenge and who will embrace a holistic approach to improving outcomes for others, and often more vulnerable members of our community.

The team is seeking an Environmental Health Professional who will bring a supportive solution-focused approach to blend into our culture. They will be able to contribute to the delivery of an efficient, effective, and customer-focused service; with a key role in protecting, sustaining, and improving people's quality of life.

The Environmental Health Officer role requires reasonable, relevant, background knowledge in food and health & safety matters. We promise a varied and interesting workload which includes managing a caseload of investigations, customer requests and enforcement referrals, in addition to routine food and safety inspections across all categories of risk. We would also be interested to hear from officers who have specialised in shellfish and fishery products as well as anyone who is currently undertaking Environmental Health Qualifications.

Applicants need to;

  • Hold a BSc or MSc or CIEH Diploma in Environmental Health and be Registered with the Environmental Health Officers’ Registration Board (or Scottish equivalent)
  • Or CIEH Register of Environmental Health Practitioners and Digital Badge Scheme (food competencies completed)

OR

  • Have the Environmental Health Registration Board (EHRB) accredited Higher Certificate in Food Premises Inspection and appear on the HCFPI register

OR

  • Be undergoing a recognised pathway to qualification for an Environmental Health degree, MSC in Environmental Health or a Higher Certificate in Food Premises Inspection.

We welcome applicants who have the required qualifications and demonstrate proactive communication, possess excellent organisational skills and can “self-manage” to prioritise their work with commitment to high standards of delivery.

In return, we are happy to talk about flexible working arrangements. You could blend home, remote, office and site working, but we are open to discussing “any hours” flexibility. In addition to the basic salary, a Market Forces Supplement can be applied to this role for candidates who are fully qualified.

Other employee benefits for this role include:

  • Excellent Local Government Pension Scheme.
  • Annual Leave entitlement up to 26 days a year.
  • Additional leave for the 8 public holidays.
  • Extra company leave of 2 days at Christmas.
  • The ability to take up to 4 “flex days” off each month.
  • Options to purchase additional days of holiday.
  • Our new “Stream”, which allows pre‑tax saving with attractive interest rates; or can be used to take your salary early if an unexpected personal expense arises.
  • Contribution towards professional memberships.
  • Mileage and subsistence allowance payments.
  • The popular “Vine Extras” discount scheme for retail, goods and services.
  • Tax‑free cycle schemes.
  • Discounted fitness classes, gym and/or swimming pool memberships.
  • Reduced cost private health care options.
  • Staff incentives for events, museums and exhibitions.
  • Diverse learning opportunities, including transferable skills, “soft skills” and ways to open career progression routes using apprenticeships, coaching, mentoring, leadership and management qualifications.
  • Employee Assistance Programme providing confidential support networks.
  • A variety of in‑house health and wellbeing activities, groups and programmes.
