PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
Lawes Consulting Group are working with a well-established insurance business seeking an experienced Underwriter to join their team in Colchester.
This is a great opportunity for a commercially minded underwriter to achieve income and profit objectives through the delivery of efficient case underwriting, working closely with brokers and internal stakeholders to support divisional strategy and financial plan objectives.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage own cases (renewal and/or new business), writing within appetite and underwriting authority.
- Handle referral cases for Underwriters and Apprentices with less experience, adhering to individual authority level.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation of all underwriting decisions.
- Adopt and adhere to company-prescribed processes, best practice and standard work.
- Support QA procedures by conducting case reviews when required, ensuring technical procedures and standards are followed.
- Work towards divisional retention, conversion, rate and loss ratio targets.
- Establish and maintain strong personal relationships with broking partners to enhance the company's standing and presence nationally.
- Display strong negotiation skills to aid conversion and relationships with all key brokers.
- Maintain and enhance personal knowledge of relevant technical topics.
- Work collaboratively with other parts of the organisation, including regional offices.
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of 2 years' experience in underwriting.
- Experience working in the Commercial Insurance industry.
- Proven track record of successfully developing and maintaining effective trading relationships.
- Experience working across functions and matrix organisations to collaborate and build strong relationships.
- Consistently achieving goals and objectives within a structured, organised and planned manner.
SKILLS
- Strong risk perception and ability to price risk accordingly.
- Effective negotiation skills — flexible and appropriate in approach.
- Confident selling and trading skills.
- Strong organisational skills with operational effectiveness and efficiency.
- Clear and effective communication, both written and verbal.
EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum A Level standard preferred.
- Progress towards Cert CII preferred.
