Lead Sterile Processing Tech
Under the direct supervision of the Director, Surgical Services and the Supervisor, Sterile Prep, the Lead Sterile Processing Tech processes all reprocessable materials—including instrument sets, trays, equipment, and specialty items—through decontamination, assembly, packaging, and terminal sterilization. The role also includes assembling surgical case carts and equipment in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
Accountabilities Decontamination- Separate instruments from other articles for washing and decontamination; notify the supervisor of missing items or malfunctions.
- Disassemble, clean, and decontaminate general, specialty, and loaner instrumentation.
- Follow manufacturer recommendations when indicated.
- Assemble instruments, sets, and peel‑pouched items; prepare special items upon request.
- Communicate effectively within and between departments.
- Demonstrate knowledge and competency in performing biological testing of steam autoclaves and sterrad units.
- Decontaminate patient care equipment from nursing units.
- Adhere to universal precautions and use appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Receive and inspect instruments from the decontamination area; follow established procedures for deletion and repair.
- Load baskets for ultrasonic cleaners, washer‑sterilizers, plasma sterilizer carriages, and cart washer according to procedures.
- Maintain environmental cleanliness and order in general and specific work areas.
- Prepare documentation for autoclave, plasma bacteriological culture, tray sets, and peel patches.
- Assemble instruments, sets, and packs according to specifications in the departmental catalogue.
- Assemble surgical case carts with an accuracy of 90 percent.
- Perform all functions related to materials processing—including packaging, loading of machinery, sterilizing, aerating, and handling.
- Perform other job functions in processing areas as assigned or directed by the supervisor.
- Receive all reprocessable materials by manual delivery in accordance with established procedures and safety regulations.
- Report malfunctioning of any stationary equipment immediately.
- Assess the needs in the sterile storage area and maintain inventory levels as designated.
- Prepare and maintain inventory of miscellaneous supply items required by Surgical Services.
- Identify outdated equipment and follow procedures for reprocessing.
- Notify supervisory personnel of problems with inventory items.
- Treat all information received and processed confidentially.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Education: High School Diploma required.
- Skills: Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Licenses: Certified Sterile Prep Tech, CBSPD (Certified Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution) credential required.
