Surgical Technician

Job Summary

Functions as a member of the surgical team performing assigned duties of the technologist in the scrub role. Applies knowledge of concepts necessary to maintain the integrity of the sterile field. Serves populations: infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.

• Demonstrate proficiency in proper scrub technique and the handling of instruments, supplies, and equipment for assigned cases following department policies and procedures and job description. Demonstrate age‑related competency for the following age populations: infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.
• Utilize preference lists, in‑depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology, departmental policies and procedures, and the patient’s age‑related needs in preparing for and carrying out case responsibilities. Share responsibilities with the clinical nurse for keeping preference cards current.
• Maintain integrity of the sterile field by utilizing aseptic techniques and observation of the surgical team. Promptly address any observed breaks in sterile technique.
• Collaborate with the circulating nurse to effect accurate sponge, instrument, and sharp counts as per departmental guideline.
• Check daily schedule to maintain proper supply of instruments, set‑ups, and supplies specific to patient’s age and physician preferences. Assist other personnel with procedures.
• Participate in the orientation of new employees and students to the scrub role. Act as a role model and resource person for staff and students.
• Maintain certification according to professional requirements and present proof of certification to the Service Coordinator.
• Serve as a liaison between co‑workers and other departments, demonstrating good guest relations with physicians, patients, and other staff. Function as a cooperative and supportive member of the surgery department staff.
• Maintain understanding of departmental goals and objectives and work with co‑workers and management to obtain goals and objectives.
• Perform other duties as directed.

Education: Must be high school graduate or equivalent. Must be a graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program.

Skills: Must be able to understand directions and be able to communicate and respond to inquiries; requires effective interpersonal skills. Must be able to input and retrieve information from computer.

Certification: CPR required.

Prior experience in a surgical setting preferred.

Certification:
Preferred Certification by the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST), certification from NCCT.

Personal Protective Equipment:
Must be able to tolerate frequent exposure to latex and latex products.

Physical Demands:
Must be able to move about hospital facility and between workstations. Must be able to tolerate possible exposure to hazardous materials and blood borne pathogens. Must be able to tolerate exposure to blood borne pathogens and body fluids. Must be able to frequently move, lift or carry light, medium, heavy to heavy weight objects and materials. Must be able to differentiate between colors, occasionally work at heights, and work with tools, manuals, and technical motors.
