Pediatrics Position Summary

The pediatric nurse practitioner (PNP) is responsible for delivering comprehensive primary and/or specialty care to pediatric patients (infants through adolescents). The PNP works in collaboration with physicians and interdisciplinary healthcare teams to promote wellness, prevent illness, and manage acute and chronic health conditions. Function as a physician extender to provide patient care.

Reporting Relationships/Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not have any direct reports.

  • Conduct physical exams, obtain patient histories, and assess pediatric health status.
  • Diagnose and treat common childhood illnesses and injuries.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests (e.g., labs, imaging).
  • Prescribe medications and therapeutic treatments in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Provide anticipatory guidance and health education to children and their families.
  • Collaborate with physicians, specialists, and other health professionals to coordinate patient care.
  • Document patient encounters, assessments, interventions, and outcomes accurately and timely in the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Participate in quality improvement initiatives and adhere to clinical guidelines.
  • Provide care that is culturally sensitive, developmentally appropriate, and family-centered.
  • Maintains medical record, including history, immunizations, growth and development, medications, physical exams, dietary management, and other pertinent information.
  • Reviews as appropriate, history, physical findings, results of diagnostic studies, social history, and other relevant information with a supervising physician, and in conjunction with the physician, proposes a plan for care of patient.
  • Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists as required to ensure optimal age-appropriate patient care.
  • Consults with and/or refers to the supervising physician, when applicable, patients who show evidence of developing complex medical problems.
  • Provides appropriate information and educational materials for patients and family.
  • Collaborates with and refers questions to other health team members.
  • Identifies available community resources and makes appropriate referrals.
  • Seeks ways to incorporate new findings into the practice as appropriate. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.
  • Provides education for other practice staff.
  • Incorporates established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards within practice.
  • Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with standards.
  • Provides care to patients with commitment to fiscal responsibility.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
  • Ability to examine, diagnose and treat patients via Telemedicine visits in the School Wellness Programs.
Qualifications Education & Certification
  • Masters or Doctorate degree in Nursing from an accredited program.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) and Nurse Practitioner (NP) in the state of Michigan.
  • Certification as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (CPNP-PC or CPNP-AC) by the PNCB or ANCC.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications are required.
Experience
  • Minimum 1–2 years of experience in pediatric care preferred (new graduates considered based on clinical rotation experience).
  • Experience with Epic, is a plus.
  • Strong clinical judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Commitment to family-centered and trauma-informed care practices.
  • Proficiency in pediatric growth and development assessment.
  • Must demonstrate and promote a strong commitment toward achieving customer/patient satisfaction
Physical Demands
  • Must be able to move about the clinic and between workstations, prolonged periods of standing.
  • Must be able to frequently move, lift or carry materials medium to heavy weight equipment, materials or persons with assistance. Weighing up to 30 lbs., 20% of the time.
