Position: Equipment Operator I - Highways & Streets

Overview

A successful candidate will play an active role in the City of College Park’s existing operational success. The purpose of the position is to perform heavy, manual labor in the areas of the Highways and Street Division. Successful performance helps ensure safe and efficient Public Works services, as well as a positive public image for the City. Independent judgment is required to identify, select and apply the most appropriate of available guidelines and procedures as well as interpret precedents.

This position is responsible for manual work of a routine nature as a member of a Maintenance Asphalt Crew that involves heavy physical labor in the areas of the Highways and Streets Division.

Responsibilities
  • Repairs and maintains City Highways and Streets.
  • Conducts road inspection and repairs street deficiencies.
  • Patches potholes and performs other tasks in repairing streets.
  • Repairs and maintains City Street cuts for repairs.
  • Loads and unloads items such as stone, gravel, dirt, asphalt, pipe, timber, and heavy mechanical equipment.
  • Assists in semi-skilled work by handling tools, carrying or lifting lumber, mixing or placing cement and asphalt, performing simple repairs, or running errands.
  • Performs a variety of other heavy manual work in connection with the maintenance of streets, roads, and facilities; assists in the installation of asphalt deep base patching.
  • Collects and disposes of debris, trash, etc. caused by job site.
  • Makes street cuts for repairs to City streets and right-of-ways.
  • Must have experience in operating lightweight vehicles, 5yd dump trucks, single axle, asphalt patch truck, backhoe, steel roller, Bobcat, front end loader, and other maintenance equipment.
  • Maintains and performs walk-around inspections on assigned equipment.
  • Lubricates, cleans, and services machinery, equipment, and tools.
  • Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that logically relate to the position.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Knowledge of City and department policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of safety rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the material commonly used in construction, maintenance, and repair activities as related to assigned areas.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety standards and practices applicable to work being conducted.
  • Skill in the operation, maintenance, and routine repair of equipment used in Public Works construction and maintenance.
  • Skill in performing various manual labor assignments as needed.
  • Ability to perform general street maintenance duties.
  • Ability to follow established safety rules and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Skilled in performing various manual labor assignments as needed.
  • Ability to perform general equipment/tool maintenance duties.
  • Ability to interpret instructions and efficiently carry them out with general supervision.
  • Ability to perform tasks involving heavy manual labor.
  • Effective analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written), organizational, and time management skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse constituents.
  • Attention to detail and adaptability to a changing environment, dependability, professionalism, initiative, resourcefulness, and personal accountability.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average weight up to 100 pounds, standing and/or walking for more than four hours per day, climbing poles, bending, crouching, or stooping, and use of tools and equipment requiring dexterity and color discernment.

Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Three (3) years of related experience.
  • Possession of a valid State of Georgia CDL Class B Driver’s License; or must obtain CDL Class B within six months of employment.
  • Experience in communicating with diverse communities, and in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
Additional Information
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, as well as knowledge and understanding of the organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.
  • Extensive hours and weekends will be required at times.
