Position: New Principal Announcement

It is my great honor to share that I have appointed Edward Owusu, Class of 1989, Our Lady of Good Counsel High School’s next Principal. We welcome him back to the Good Counsel community, which has helped form him into a talented educator and school leader who has served the community with faith and integrity for over thirty years.

As a proud graduate from the Wheaton campus and former Good Counsel track and field coach, he knows firsthand the values, traditions, and excellence that define our community. Currently, he serves as Executive Director for the Montgomery County Association of Administrators and Principals and on the Board of Governors for the Grace Episcopal Day School. Mr. Owusu is the Micro-Credential Assessor for the School Improvement Leadership Academy (SILA), Mira Education, and Center for Educational Innovation and Improvement (CEII) at the University of Maryland, College Park.

His prior leadership and instructional experience includes serving as a principal for fifteen years at multiple schools, most recently at Clarksburg High School.

In Mr. Owusu, we have found an extraordinary collaborative school leader who exemplifies a Xaverian Brother’s education and demonstrates commitment to his Catholic faith. He has the vision, strategic leadership, and experience to continue fostering academic excellence at Good Counsel. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated expertise in innovative leadership, educational program development, strategic partnerships, student success, and well-being. During the search process, Mr.

Owusu impressed the community with his passion for community building and cultivating a supportive environment for students, faculty, staff, and parents. We are confident that Mr. Owusu will lead Good Counsel with wisdom and a commitment to our Catholic and Xaverian Brothers mission.

“I am excited and deeply grateful to return to Good Counsel, a place that has always held a special place in my heart,” says Owusu. “This is more than a new role—it’s a homecoming guided by faith. I believe God has ordered my steps back to Good Counsel, where the seeds of my faith, leadership, and love for community were planted.

As an alumnus, I know firsthand the strength of this school’s mission and the lasting impact it can have on a young person’s life. I’m returning because I want to give back to the community that shaped me and my older brother, and because I feel called to serve with purpose and heart. After more than thirty years in K–12 education, this is a full-circle moment—an opportunity to merge my faith, values, and professional experience in the place that helped launch my journey.”

In addition to his school leadership roles, Mr. Owusu has been an adjunct instructor at Hood College, department chair, technology instructional specialist, and teacher in Montgomery County Public Schools. Mr. Owusu holds a Master of Education degree from Bowie State University and a Bachelor of Science from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He has been a parishioner of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Washington, DC, for over thirty years.

He and his wife Root, have raised four sons in the church, all of whom have been, and two are currently altar servers. Two of his children are studying in college at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Ohio State University. “I am proud of the young men they are growing up to be, encouraging them to Be Good and Do Good,” says Owusu.

I sincerely thank the search committee members who worked tirelessly over the past three and a half months. Their care, commitment, and dedication to Good Counsel and its future were present in every moment of the process. I appreciate their dedication to this important work, which led to the recommendation of Mr. Owusu as our next principal. I am also grateful to our board of directors, alumni, faculty, staff, parents, and students who participated in this process and gave their time to meet with each of the final candidates and share their insights with the search committee.

All stakeholders’ engagement is a testament to the strength of our community.

With the search process concluded, we will now focus on a smooth transition and provide Mr. Owusu with a warm welcome to Good Counsel. You will have opportunities to get to know Mr. Owusu in the months ahead. We look forward to July 1, 2025, when Mr. Owusu officially comes home to the Good Counsel Community.
