Tenure-Track Faculty Positions in Nuclear Engineering

Department of Nuclear Engineering (NUEN) College Station, TX

Posted August 26, 2026

Description

The Department of Nuclear Engineering (NUEN) at Texas A&M University invites applications for up to four full-time tenure-track positions with a 9-month academic appointment, and the possibility of an additional summer appointment contingent upon need and availability of funds, beginning August 1, 2027.

Specialties of interest include, but are not limited to, advanced fission reactors (with focus on multiphysics analysis, safety, risk analysis, and instrumentation and controls), radiation detection and measurement (including detector and instrumentation development and radiation spectroscopy), and fusion science and engineering (with focus on fusion power plant engineering and power conversion, inertial fusion energy and high-energy-density physics, and magnetic confinement and plasma physics).

Candidates whose research bridges these areas or provides complementary capabilities are also encouraged to apply. The department welcomes candidates with experimental, computational, or combined expertise. Research and teaching that responsibly leverage data science, artificial intelligence, or machine learning are also welcomed where those approaches advance the underlying science or engineering. Successful candidates will be expected to establish and sustain an externally funded, nationally recognized research program;

publish impactful scholarship; teach undergraduate and graduate courses; mentor students; collaborate across disciplinary boundaries; and contribute through professional and institutional service.

Established in 1958, the Department of Nuclear Engineering at TAMU is one of the nation's oldest and most distinguished programs. It lies within TAMU's College of Engineering, which in FY 2024 achieved the distinction of having the largest research expenditures in the US ($463 million). Its student population of 500+ (graduate and undergraduate) is the largest in the nation. The Department is currently playing a central role in the plans of Texas A&M University System (TAMUS) and the State of Texas for establishing nuclear power and advanced reactors as a dominant source of clean energy in the 21st century.

The Department supports the System's Energy Proving Ground at the RELLIS Campus, where multiple developers are working toward deployment of small modular and microreactors. It has unique infrastructure and centers that include the Fuel Cycle and Materials Laboratory (FCML), the Center for Nuclear Security Science & Policy Initiatives (NSSPI), the Center for Large-Scale Scientific Simulations (CLASS), and the Center for Advanced Small Modular and Microreactors (CASMR).

In addition, incoming faculty will have access to the Nuclear Engineering and Science Center and its TRIGA reactor to support their experimental and computational research.

The department offers B.S., M.S., M.Eng., and Ph.D. degrees in nuclear engineering and an undergraduate minor in radiological health engineering. The vast majority of graduate students are funded via research assistantships, teaching assistantships, and fellowships. The undergraduate program has held accreditation from ABET since 1969.

Education and Experience

Applicants must have earned a doctorate in Nuclear Engineering or other suitable Engineering Field or Natural Sciences.

Full consideration will be given to applications received by December 1, 2026.

Equal Opportunity/Veterans/Disability Employer.
