THE POSITION

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Drug and Alcohol Treatment Specialist 1, you will provide professional casework and counseling services to substance‑abusing and dependent inmates. You will participate in beginning‑level professional care by preparing individualized treatment and recovery plans. You will also supervise individual treatment sessions, facilitate group therapy, and utilize progressive disciplinary measures to address inmate behavioral deficiencies. This role requires demonstrated understanding of the techniques used to rehabilitate inmates combined with a genuine desire to promote positive cognitive and behavioral changes that will enhance successful reentry into the community.

In addition, you will attend training to expand professional skills, participate in treatment team meetings, and complete discharge summaries, classification summaries, and parole summaries.

Work Schedule and Additional Information
  • Full‑time employment, 40 hours per week
  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday‑Friday, with a 30‑minute lunch
  • This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $55,436.00 (before taxes)

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS
  • One year of para‑professional experience providing drug and alcohol counseling services directly to clients in a social work setting; and certification by the PA Chemical Abuse Certification Board as a 'Certified Addictions Counselor'
  • One year of experience as a Corrections Counselor or Social Worker (Commonwealth job titles or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration)
  • One year of professional experience providing drug and alcohol counseling services directly to clients in a social work setting and a bachelor's degree that includes 18 college credits in the behavioral sciences
  • A master's degree with major coursework in addictions science, psychology, or social work
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes 18 college credits in the behavioral sciences

Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required
  • This position requires the selected candidate to be able to read, write, and speak in Spanish. You may be contacted for a Spanish speaking proficiency evaluation conducted by the Bureau of Talent Acquisition, PA Office of Administration. If contacted, you must pass the speaking evaluation in order to be deemed eligible for this position. Your proficiency in reading and writing in Spanish must be demonstrated during the probationary period to achieve regular status in the position
