Code Enforcement Inspector (Contract)
Conducts routine inspections and investigates complaints to ensure compliance with the City codes, ordinances, regulations, and laws pertaining to property maintenance and zoning.
Responsibilities- Conduct routine residential and commercial property inspections to ensure compliance with City codes, ordinances, regulations and laws pertaining to property maintenance and zoning.
- Perform inspections for zoning compliance and conditions of approval for the City.
- Inspect and enforce all city code violations affecting residential and commercial areas—including inoperable vehicles, tall grass and weeds, exterior storage of trash, objects, and equipment not intended for exterior use, and other violations.
- Issue written warnings and notices of violations as necessary on behalf of the Zoning Administrator; prepare written correspondence for property maintenance and zoning matters.
- Manage enforcement contracts and ensure vendors fulfill duties as approved by the City and ensure renewal to avoid a lapse of service.
- Investigate and collect information on reports of potential property maintenance and zoning regulations and violations.
- Prepare reports on property maintenance and zoning matters.
- Report suspected violations of the Uniform Statewide Building Code to the Building Official for evaluation.
- Maintain records of inspections and enforce violation correction to include nuisance abatement and/or court action.
- Testify in court on certain cases and/or zoning issues.
- Address public and professional inquiries.
- Other duties as required.
- Two years of college or Associate’s Degree and at least three years directly related experience; or
- A Bachelor’s Degree and at least two years directly related experience; or
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Possess a Valid Virginia Driver's License.
- Certified Zoning Official (CZO) designation by the Virginia Association of Zoning Officials is desirable.
The work requires physical exertion such as walking over rough or difficult terrain; recurring standing, stooping, climbing or walking; recurring lifting of moderately heavy items weighing between 25 and 50 pounds. The work may require specific physical characteristics and abilities such as heightened strength, mobility, and dexterity. The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress that require a range of safety and other precautions.
