Assistant Fire Marshal (Part‑time) – City of Colonial Heights (Contract)

Position OverviewAssists the Deputy Fire Marshal by performing skilled technical work in the areas of fire and hazard inspections, investigations, and community risk activities.
Responsibilities- Plans, schedules, and determines the scope and detail of inspections of residential, commercial, institutional, industrial, and building occupancies.
- Conducts field inspections to ensure fire safety and compliance with fire and other related codes and standards.
- Issues notices of code violations and summonses to court for non‑compliance; conducts follow‑up inspections to ensure corrective action is taken.
- Interprets fire and building codes.
- Assists the Deputy Fire Marshal by conducting investigations to include suspicious or accidental fires, environmental crimes, hazardous materials incidents and fire‑related injuries and deaths to determine cause and origin of fire.
- Mandatory attendance at designated events to include the annual Christmas parade and all firework displays.
- Responds to FOIA requests, follows up on third‑party reports, and maintains databases.
- May respond to fire or EMS calls and assists with various fire suppression and incident command activities as needed.
- Attend monthly continuing education training sessions.
- Addresses public and professional inquiries.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High School diploma/GED with at least 2 years of related work experience.
- Must possess/obtain the following certifications and maintain them throughout the course of employment:
- VDFP Firefighter I and II
- Hazardous Materials Awareness
- Virginia Fire Marshal Academy (VFMA) Fire Inspector I and II
- Must possess/obtain the following certifications within 24 months and maintain them throughout the course of employment:
- Virginia Fire Marshal Academy (VFMA) Fire Investigator
- Commonwealth of Virginia Fire Inspector and Core Modules must be obtained through the Virginia Department of Housing & Community Development.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of fire prevention including inspection, hazard types and causes, and elimination of hazardous condition.
- Knowledge of local, state, and national codes, laws, and ordinances relating to code enforcement.
- Thorough knowledge of fire and/or criminal investigation principles and practices, including court opinions and interpretations of law, and appropriate documentation and evidence collection techniques; thorough knowledge of court preparation and trial procedures, judicial parameters and appropriate courtroom demeanor relating to the presentation of expert testimony.
- Thorough knowledge of the principles and processes for providing customer service.
- May respond to fire investigation calls outside of routine office hours.
The work requires physical exertion such as walking over rough or difficult terrain; recurring standing, stooping, climbing or walking; recurring lifting of moderately heavy items weighing between 25 and 75 pounds and may require the occasional lifting of objects weighing in excess of 74 pounds. The work may require specific physical characteristic and abilities such as heightened strength, mobility, and dexterity.
The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress that require a range of safety and other precautions.
