About the Role

The Property Accounting Supervisor plays a critical role in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial reporting across Places Management’s growing portfolio. This is a hands‑on, senior‑level individual contributor role responsible for owning month‑end close activities, preparing GAAP‑compliant financial statements, and serving as a key accounting partner to Operations, leadership, and ownership groups.

The ideal candidate brings strong technical accounting skills, deep attention to detail, and experience in property or real estate accounting. They are comfortable operating independently, managing multiple properties, and communicating clearly in a fast‑paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Perform detailed balance sheet reconciliations, income statement reviews, and variance analysis.
  • Analyze financial results to identify trends, risks, and opportunities.
  • Prepare ownership and leadership reporting packages with clear explanations and supporting detail.
  • Ensure completeness and accuracy of property‑level financial data.

Month‑End Close & Accounting Controls

  • Own the month‑end close process for assigned properties, including AR, AP, accruals, and GL review.
  • Ensure all transactions are recorded in the correct period and in accordance with accounting policies.
  • Review security deposit activity to ensure proper accounting and compliance with state regulations.
  • Review PO aging, received/not‑received reports, and accruals to ensure accuracy.
  • Maintain and follow standardized close checklists and internal controls.

Technical Accounting & Compliance

  • Apply Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) consistently across all reporting.
  • Support and participate in audit preparation and respond to auditor requests.
  • Assist with accounting policy implementation and documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, accounting procedures, and company standards.

Cash Management & Forecasting

  • Support cash management activities including payables, receivables, and treasury reporting.
  • Assist with cash flow forecasting, capital requests, and portfolio‑level planning.
  • Partner with Operations to validate cash needs and timing at the property level.

Collaboration & Cross‑Functional Support

  • Serve as a key accounting partner to Operations, Property Managers, and leadership.
  • Communicate financial information clearly and effectively to non‑accounting stakeholders.
  • Support property transitions, onboarding, and system integrations as the portfolio grows.
  • Provide guidance and accounting expertise to support operational decision‑making.

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Utilize App Folio, Yardi, or similar property management systems to maintain financial accuracy.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, automation, and consistency in accounting workflows.
  • Support documentation and training related to accounting best practices and processes.

Qualifications

Knowledge & Experience

  • 3–6 years of accounting experience with a focus on financial reporting.
  • Real estate or multifamily property accounting experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience owning month‑end close activities for multiple entities or properties.

Skills

  • Strong understanding of financial statements and GAAP.
  • Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with proven ability to meet deadlines independently.
