Overview
Job title:
Teacher of the Deaf - Secondary English Language Arts.
Employer:
State of Colorado / Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind (CSDB).
This position provides standards-based instruction to 6th–12th grade students who are Deaf or hard of hearing and reports to the Principal, School for the Deaf. It uses Colorado State Standards and benchmarks to establish instructional goals and uses assessments that measure whether students meet standards in a safe and civil school environment.
Responsibilities- Performs work associated with standards-based student instruction: prepares lesson plans, develops input for and presents daily instructional activities based upon the IEP and school reform tenets under the direction of the Principal / School for the Deaf; maintains a positive classroom environment, keeps students on task and engaged in learning.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skill in task analysis, assessment, progress monitoring, behavior management, organization and planning, curriculum development, current technology practices, parent relations and teamwork.
- Utilizes technology to model, teach, and assist students relative to classroom instruction and activities.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skill in project and technology-based learning.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skill in the area of bilingual education.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skill in literacy intervention strategies.
- Organizes the classroom for collaborative group work.
- Works in co teaching teams with others.
- Works as part of the education and assessment team responsible for identifying, developing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating individual objectives for assigned students.
- Utilizes effective communication skills with a commitment to literacy development for each student.
- Understands and supports students' social and emotional development.
- Serves as a case manager for assigned students, including developing and implementing IEPs and facilitating IEP meetings.
- Coordinates effectively with other service staff in providing instruction, supporting school reform efforts, strategic planning, and contributing to co curricular activities.
- Acts as a collaborative team member within the School for the Deaf and CSDB, and participates in regular team and departmental meetings as required.
- Provides parent consultation and participates in selected parent-focused activities.
- Seeks opportunities for and participates in professional development and training opportunities as appropriate.
- Performs other appropriate duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's Degree in Education or closely related field from an accredited college or university.
- Master's Degree in Education or closely related field from an accredited college or university, with specialization in Deaf Education, preferred and required within three years of hire.
- Must hold or be eligible for appropriate educator licensure in the State of Colorado within three years of hire, endorsed as a Special Education Specialist:
Deaf/Hard of Hearing. - If Special
Education:
Deaf/ Hard of Hearing licensure is not held upon hire, then must hold or be eligible to hold State of Colorado Temporary Educator Eligibility licensure in Teacher of the Deaf within one year of hire. - Must hold or be eligible for State of Colorado Teacher endorsement in English Language Arts (7-12) and READ endorsement within one year of hire.
- If no State of Colorado educator licensure is held upon hire, then must hold or be eligible for substitute teacher licensure or educator licensure in the State of Colorado within one month of hire.
- Experience teaching or working with children who are Deaf or hard of hearing, or who may have multiple disabilities, is desired.
- Proficiency in American Sign Language ASL at the Intermediate skill level as demonstrated through an appropriate assessment tool and according to school policy upon hire.
- Proficiency in American Sign Language ASL at the Advanced skill level as demonstrated through an appropriate assessment tool and according to school policy within two years of hire.
- Knowledge of and ability to apply current standards-based educational practices for students who are Deaf/hard-of-hearing.
- Knowledge of and ability to assess and apply technology to perform the requirements of the position; ability to use computer software such as email, Internet, word processing, calendar, presentation development, spreadsheets, databases; willingness to stay current with or without direct CSDB support.
- Knowledge of and ability to adapt teaching skills, classroom management and lesson preparation to a technology-rich environment including on-site classroom, telepresence and distance education technologies; ability to model, teach, and assist students with classroom instruction and activities.
- Ability to establish high standards for what students must know and be able to do.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students who are Deaf/hard-of-hearing.
