General Responsibilities

This position reports to the ASL Services Supervisor and is responsible for providing support to students who are Deaf / hard‑of‑hearing and their hearing siblings, parents, CSDB staff, and community members related to activities sponsored by Outreach Programs that include or focus on the development of knowledge of ASL and bilingual (ASL/English) education.

It contributes to CSDB’s Commitment to partnership and authentic growth by supporting language fluency through ASL instruction and advances our Aspiration to prepare future thinkers, makers, and leaders who transform the world.

Job Functions
  • Provide ASL instruction for CSDB staff, students, educators, and parents throughout Colorado and to community members, as requested, via direct (in‑person) instruction and/or online technology.
  • Develop and lead ASL immersion activities for families and/or professionals, as well as other ASL learning opportunities, on the CSDB campus and statewide, as requested.
  • Collaborate with the ASL Services Supervisor and Media team to develop informational videos for training and distance learning activities.
  • Develop and modify curricula to support ASL instructional efforts.
  • Assist in expanding the visibility of CSDB Outreach Programs within the Colorado Deaf Community and nationwide.
  • Collaborate effectively with other Outreach Programs, CSDB staff, and constituents to achieve Strategic Plan goals, and contribute to committee work on and off campus.
  • Participate as a team member of Outreach Programs and CSDB, attending regular meetings and professional development activities as required.
  • Stay current with evolving ASL trends, resources, and pedagogy to enhance relevance and cultural responsiveness in instruction.
  • Provide training and workshops on Deaf Culture for a variety of professional audiences (e.g., educators, medical providers, interpreters, community partners).
  • Support the development, administration, and interpretation of ASL assessments and evaluations to monitor progress and guide instruction.
  • Perform other appropriate duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in ASL / Linguistics, Teaching ASL, Deaf Studies, Education or a closely related field from an accredited college or university, or documented work experience providing an equivalent knowledge base related to ASL instruction.
  • Hold or be eligible for appropriate educator licensure in Colorado, endorsed as a Special Education Specialist:
    Deaf/Hard‑of‑Hearing, or comparable endorsement.
  • ASLTA Certification (desired).
  • Three (3) years of experience teaching or working with students (in an educational environment) who are Deaf / hard‑of‑hearing and/or adults in ASL learning environments.
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) at Advanced Plus (ASLPI:4 or above) skill level, demonstrated through an appropriate assessment tool.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • In‑depth knowledge/training in ASL education.
  • Ability to assess ASL proficiency or willingness to receive training in this area.
  • Strong knowledge of and ability to utilize English in a bilingual environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Deaf culture.
  • Ability to apply technology to perform position requirements, effectively using computer software, e‑mail, Internet, word processing, electronic calendar, and presentation development.
  • Ability to adapt teaching skills to a technology‑rich environment, including telepresence and distance education technologies.
  • Effective communication with all audiences, responsiveness to feedback, and cooperative teamwork.
