The School of Integrated General Studies (SIGS) provides the common core academic education upon which later specialized disciplinary education builds. It forms cadets as Citizens, Leaders, Warfighters, and Scholars. The SIGS curriculum integrates civics, humanities, arts, and social sciences (CHASS), STEM and Artificial Intelligence, and Warfighting threads.
Faculty work across conventional disciplinary boundaries to build a rigorous, ordered, and mission-aligned general education for future Air Force and Space Force officers. The CHASS thread forms cadets for the civic, human, moral, historical, cultural, and political dimensions of officership.
Centered on Western civilization and the American constitutional order, it asks cadets to understand the civilization and republic they are preparing to serve, confront enduring questions of human nature, justice, freedom, authority, war, citizenship and the common good, and understand the responsibilities that accompany the exercise of authority.
Through sustained engagement with primary texts, historical experience, literature, philosophy, political thought, rhetoric, religion, the arts, and the social sciences, cadets should develop the knowledge, habits, and judgment required of reflective citizens, responsible leaders, capable warfighters, and serious lifelong scholars.
CHASS is not a collection of introductory disciplinary surveys; disciplinary knowledge is selected and ordered in service of common formative purposes. These are teaching-centered positions.
SIGS seeks educators who combine genuine disciplinary depth with unusual intellectual breadth; can teach beyond a narrow specialization; work seriously with primary texts, historical experience, literature, ideas, institutions, and competing arguments; and contribute to a common integrated curriculum. Faculty should connect civic and humanistic learning to leadership, war fighting, technology, national security, constitutional responsibility, and the profession of arms.
Scholarly and professional activity supports this mission, but the paramount purpose of these positions is excellent undergraduate teaching and related institutional service aimed at sustaining the excellence and integration of the core curriculum.
