Data Scientist
The State of Colorado is seeking a Statistical Analyst. This position is only open to Colorado state residents.
Description Of JobThis position exists to query offender data systems by downloading necessary data and building large datasets from relational databases; report population trends; analyze data for forecasting and reporting the impact of decisions; complete ad hoc requests and surveys; maintain Office of Planning and Analysis reporting system; and independently develop and complete a range of analyses and reports using inferential statistical measures in response to department data requests.
Primaryjob duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Publish periodic departmental reports and bulletins by designing, organizing, and maintaining databases comprised of departmental data;
- Conduct statistical analyses of data, interpret complex datasets and statistical output, and identify and report statistical trends in written and graphical formats;
- Collaborate with other state and federal agencies to routinely report and securely transfer electronic offender data for official reporting;
- Effectively use the Office of Planning and Analysis reporting system to select the necessary offender data and conduct statistical analyses in order to respond to requests for information about various population subsets;
- Service data and research requests by interpreting data questions; collect and analyze data from multiple sources such as computer reports, online programs, and published literature; and conduct analyses using statistical techniques;
- Ensure that the requesting party understands and interprets the findings correctly;
- Maintain Office of Planning and Analysis reporting system, verification of information and detection of errors or missing information for the purpose of making accurate and accountable statistical reporting;
- Analyze the impact to the department of proposed legislation by conducting an analysis of the history of the bill, interpreting the effect of proposed changes to the offender population or department, developing an analytic strategy, analyzing the impact, documenting all methods and data used to arrive at a fiscal impact, and writing a summary of the findings;
- Other duties as assigned.
Six (6) years of experience in statistics, statistical analysis, mathematics, economics, research methodology or related field.
OR a combination of related education and/or experience in statistics, statistical analysis, mathematics, economics, research methodology or related field equal to six (6) years.

- Ability to read and comprehend the English language.
- Ability to effectively communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing.
- Work experience in corrections, judicial system, or law enforcement agency.
- Knowledge and experience in the Department's current information systems including database structures and relationships.
- Ability to independently research and assess existing database systems and create research/reporting databases.
- Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process, including Colorado Revised Statutes.
- Knowledge and experience in creating data visualizations in Tableau or similar data visualization software.
