Position: Inactive Mines Staff Biologist (EPS I)

Inactive Mines Staff Biologist (EPS I)

Colorado Department of Natural Resources – Division of Reclamation, Mining & Safety. This position is open only to current residents of Colorado and will not be filled until January 1, or after, due to the state’s current hiring freeze.

Job Overview

Support the Colorado Inactive Mine Reclamation Program (CIMRP) staff by completing Threatened and Endangered Species Analyses and/or Biological Assessments/Biological Evaluations under Section 7(c) of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The role also involves data entry into eAMLIS, preparation of NEPA Environmental Assessment and Categorical Exclusion Determination packages, and OSMRE reporting.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct field expertise assessments and ecological studies related to mine reclamation projects.
  • Perform Threatened and Endangered Species Analyses and Biological Assessments/Biological Evaluations.
  • Enter and maintain data in the Abandoned Mine Land Inventory System (eAMLIS).
  • Assemble and complete NEPA Environmental Assessment and Categorical Exclusion Determination documents to receive Authorization to Proceed (ATP) from OSMRE.
  • Assist in the environmental review process focused on public health, safety, and environmental hazard abatement.
  • Help with OSMRE reporting requirements.
Minimum Qualifications

Five (5) years of relevant experience within the biological, mining, environmental, or other ecological field related to the work assigned to the position; OR a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, ecology, natural science, environmental science, or a related field AND one (1) year of equivalent experience within the mining reclamation, environmental, biological or other ecological field.

Applicants using education to meet qualifications must provide transcripts showing degree awarded and date conferred.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Current or former State experience relevant to this position.
  • Experience conducting consultations with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service pursuant to the Endangered Species Act.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently.
  • Experience with active, inactive, or abandoned mines.
  • Experience completing T&E Species Analysis and Biological Assessments/Biological Evaluations.
  • Experience performing field surveys.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to be flexible and adjust to changing schedule needs.
  • Ability to work well with a diverse population.
Conditions Of Employment
  • Colorado residency is required at the time of application.
  • Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must disclose the information on the application and provide an explanation why the prior termination or resignation should not disqualify the applicant from the current position.
  • A current & valid driver’s license is required for operating a state vehicle; significant travel is anticipated.
  • Must be willing and able to occasionally exert up to 20 lbs. of force to move objects.
  • Any worker expected to drive a state‑owned vehicle is responsible for maintaining a safe driving record and a valid driver license prior to driving any state‑owned vehicle.
