The City of Gunnison is looking for dedicated individuals to join our Water/Wastewater team—whether you're new to the field or an experienced certified operator. In this essential role, you'll help operate and maintain the City’s water treatment, wastewater treatment, distribution, and collection systems. Work ranges from system monitoring and sampling to equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and responding to customer inquiries and emergencies.

You’ll have the opportunity to work outdoors in a hands‑on, team‑focused environment while building valuable technical skills that support the health and safety of our community.

This position involves a variety of daily tasks, on‑call rotations, heavy equipment operation, and cross‑training across both water and wastewater operations. General Purpose

Responsible for one or more of the following: the operation and maintenance of the water treatment, water distribution, water storage, wastewater treatment and wastewater collections. May perform maintenance, repairs and construction of water distribution, sewer collection, irrigation and storm drain systems. May perform installations, repairs, and testing on all water meters. Understands functions and applications of materials used in water and/or sewer installations and repairs.

May be responsible for water sampling and analysis, conducting inspections and record keeping. May perform technical tasks related to the operation, maintenance, repair, and security of the wastewater treatment plant including equipment, vehicles, grounds, and the laboratory.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
General Responsibilities
  • Ensure public health and safety through the water and wastewater treatment processes
  • Execution of daily operations of water/wastewater treatment and processes and any appropriate safety trainings and processes.
  • Aide in the performance of all regular process controls and monitoring, data logs, documenting, and data logging are completed
  • Assist in the operations, maintenance of pumps, VFD's, motors, and other specialized equipment to maintain the proper functionality of the treatment processes.
  • Collect any required samples throughout the treatment process or in the community.
  • Maintain, repair and service operations machinery and equipment including pumps, valves, motors, meters, tanks and reservoirs; change lubrications.
  • Respond to and resolve public complaints and inquiries; investigate complaints; document findings and recommendations.
  • Maintain access and cleanliness of facilities and grounds. Operate equipment to maintain plant access and cleanliness of facility appurtenances.
  • Respond to On‑Call emergencies and alarms as well as other related duties not specifically listed.
  • Assist in exercising the City’s water rights through use and maintenance of the irrigation system.
  • Must have the ability to obtain CDPHE required licenses and a minimum Class B Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Assists in snow removal operations and assists other departments as required.
  • Participates in the on‑call rotation
  • Performs other duties as required
Specific Responsibilities

This position will work within their respective team of Water and/or Wastewater but will be expected to cross‑train and be a multifunctional employee across both sectors. They will need to ensure that the appropriate training and execution of tasks take place to maintain the utmost quality in the treatment process. They will work directly with the Water/Wastewater Chief Operator and/or the Water/Wastewater Superintendent.

They are responsible for assisting in collaborations between the facilities for major tasks, as well as effectively executing the departmental workload.
