Job Responsibilities
- Responds to, supervises, and investigates major crimes and participates in law enforcement activities; attends the scenes of crime to search for and preserve forensic and physical evidence.
- Performs skilled investigative work involving alleged crimes against persons and property; conducts follow‑up investigations as necessary.
- Assists the Detective Sergeant in all phases of law enforcement investigations (criminal, civil, or internal) either as a special investigation or on a day‑to‑day basis.
- Recovers lost or stolen property; prepares reports and maintains records or files of work performed.
- Performs surveillance duty and patrols in civilian clothing, develops and maintains informative contacts, and conducts undercover investigations as necessary.
- Works with, advises and receives advice from all members of the department, building a team environment within the division; works closely with other investigators and relays information pertaining to possible or potential criminal investigations within the county and with other agencies.
- Performs liaison work between and with other law enforcement agencies in and out of the county.
- Performs on‑job training to other investigators, sergeants and deputies while conducting investigations.
- Reviews other investigations within his division and makes suggestions and recommendations when necessary.
- Performs any other duties as assigned by a supervisor.
- Three years of progressively responsible law‑enforcement related experience.
- Valid Colorado Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.
- POST certified in the State of Colorado.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws; city and county ordinances.
- Knowledge of first aid and medical procedures and practices.
- Knowledge of county geography and surrounding areas including roads, streets, landmarks, and buildings.
- Knowledge of proper law‑enforcement principles, procedures, and practices.
- Knowledge of practices and methods of criminal investigation and identification.
- Knowledge of and skill in use of law‑enforcement vehicles, firearms, and related equipment, and principles and practices of self‑defense.
- Ability to make decisions in a timely manner under critical or stressful situations.
- Ability to understand and exchange verbal/written instruction or information and maintain a calm demeanor during crises and when dealing with persons who may be hysterical, abusive, incoherent, intoxicated, or excited.
- Must be able to work assigned shifts to meet the needs of the Park County Sheriff’s Office to provide 24 hour/7 day per week coverage, including weekend, holiday, and night shifts.
- Must meet department proficiency standards for specialized equipment, including firearms.
- All offers of employment are conditional upon successful completion of: background investigation, psychological evaluation, physical examination, carry test, lift test, dummy drag test, kneel/crawl test, treadmill testing to 10 MET level, lumbar ROM baseline, audiogram, and drug screen.
- Must be in a physical condition to perform a high level of sustained physical activity.
- Ability to occasionally climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; taste or smell (likely typo, kept as is).
- Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and to reach with hands and arms.
- Ability to restrain a suspect or prisoner.
- Ability to operate a computer keyboard and various types of computers.
- Ability to safely operate a vehicle.
The County is rural with paved and unpaved mountain roads. Environmental conditions may include occasional exposure to fumes, odors, gases, explosives, and air/blood borne diseases. Work is frequently conducted outside in hot, cold, wet, or dry conditions. Extreme wind, snow, and ice conditions occur during winter months. Moderate exposure to loud noises.
